Don't let the gates fool you

The problem with leasing an apartment is that the leasing agents only show you the nice parts when you visit. So you'll see the gate, and the "concierge trash" bins, the nice floor plans, and the great view of the lake from the office. What you won't see is the terrible parking - coming home after 8pm usually meant a walk of about a block to get to my unit, and there's very little in the way of sidewalks; you won't notice the apathetic insulation - I could hear every step of the people above me (not to mention their giant dog), and could usually figure out what was on TV in the unit next door; you won't know that the office staff comes across as very nice when everything's going well, but cuts and runs at the first sign of a problem. Also, they're not likely to tell you that the gate breaks often, and they had to hire private security because cars were getting broken into. If the rent were lower and the claim that they're a "luxury complex" were dropped I'd be more likely to give them a higher rating. But for what you pay, and for the image they're trying to present, these apartments leave much to be desired. I couldn't wait to get out.
