Resident 2004 - 2006

4/13/2006

My roommate and I moved into the Oaks at Briarcliff in 2004. We chose it because at the time, there were a lot of college students and it was a large, reasonably decent space for the money. The first year went by without major incident so we decided to renew our lease. We renewed for another year and within the next three months the place started going downhill fast.

1.The first big problem is the ever rotating management/office staff. There have probably been 4-5 near complete changes in the two years we have lived here, which makes it hard to address issues because you are constantly having to explain history to new people.

2.The gates have worked for a total of about 2 months since we moved in although we have had to take our phone number up to the office at least 3 times because they were supposedly fixing them.

3.In June of 2005 my car was hit and totaled in the parking lot. It was 4 in the morning and despite several witnesses the person was never caught, mostly because no one was able to get the tag number. My roommates car has been hit twice, and neither time has anyone left a note or anything.

4. Our apartment was broken into with no signs of forced entry which means it was someone with a key. They didn't take very much but it's completely unnerving all the same.

5. Our dishwasher fell out of it's bracket because it was held in with *1* screw, when it was supposed to have 6. Had it fallen on someone it would have been very painful.

6. The power to our kitchen was out for several days. It turned out it was a tripped breaker but it still sucked.

7. Our upstairs neighbors heater caught on fire and we had to evacuate our apartment at 4 in the morning because they were worried that the whole place might go up.

8. The parking situation here is atrocious. If you come home after midnight on the weekends you may or may not be able to find a parking space. Several times I have had to park in the shopping center behind the complex.

9. There are 4 phone jacks in the apartment but when we got our phone turned on, only one worked. The wires to all the others had been cut by guys redoing the carpet. We would have had to pay to have the jacks rewired so we have been dealing with just having the one. Not a huge deal since we primarily use our cellphones but if we didn't it would really suck.

10. The machines in the fitness center are out of order more often than not. We don't really go but they advertise this as a benefit of the complex so they should work.

11. The bugs are out of control!! We have had the exterminator sent out several times to no avail. I can't wait to get away from the roaches. YUCK.

12. The building is sinking so that there is a huge gap underneath the front door, this makes it very energy inefficient and there is an awful draft on your feet. It also means that there are problems with almost all doors, from not shutting to not locking.

Basically, this apartment is going downhill really quickly and unless you are a very broke college student you won't be able to bear living here. The one positive about this place is that for the most part, the maintenance is quick and efficient. And Jenny, who is the one person who has been on staff since I moved in is very friendly and helpful. Other than that, I can't wait to get away.
