Resident ā€¢ 2009 - 2011

3/10/2011

Lovely place.

As a graduate student (who sometimes has to spend weekends working), I have enjoyed my 18 months or so at Jackson Square. It's relatively quiet, with only the occasional clamor in the hallways. Noise is never prolonged; it's generally just people talking loudly until they reach their apartments. I can occasionally hear through the walls, but only if something is especially loud. Neighbors are, overall, very quiet. The inside of my apartment is very nice (though I was disappointed with the stains on the carpet that were present at my move-in). The fixtures and cabinetry are of good quality, and the kitchen in my apartment (the Lord Byron) is stellar. The (enormous) pantry has actual wood shelving instead of wire, which is a godsend for anyone who does serious cooking. It's a wonderful layout for me-- open concept and a sensible allocation of space. Also, all of my windows face the woods behind the complex, which is pretty (though creepy to hear the coyotes howling along with emergency vehicles). Maintenance issues were always promptly addressed, and everyone who has come into my apartment has been friendly. I am grateful, however, that I don't near live the trash-- that area stinks terribly in summer. The front gates are almost always broken, though as a resident on the third floor I don't have to worry as much about break-ins, shady characters, etc. I'm not certain why people don't feel safe in this complex-- as a twenty-something upper-middle-class white girl who lives alone, I've never felt unsafe here. There are lots of young families around, taking walks in the evening. Youngish neighborhood kids have offered to help me with my groceries, and though I resent the implication that I'm incapable of carrying them myself, it was certainly friendly and polite of them to offer. I did one time have a package torn open on my doorstep and its contents removed (someone stole my copy of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit... I mean, really!), but aside from that issue, no safety problems. The office staff has been curt, on occasion, but never unhelpful. They've always done what I asked even if they weren't grinning with pleasure at the thought of going to get my package. I will be moving out of the complex in 6 months, but only because they don't have any 2 bedroom floorplans that appeal to me and I'm moving in with a roommate. If I had the option of staying, I would. I like this place a lot. We'll see how they treat me at move-out and if I get slapped with any weird fees. I kept the apartment in pristine condition, so if there are charges, I'm definitely going to be updating this review. But as it stands, I expect that it will be fine.
