I am usually wary of negative reviews on here (some people are way too picky). However, I wish I would have heeded other reviewers' warnings about the incompetence and rudeness of the management at the Irene. I went and visited the apartment. It is decent. Apartments are quite spacious and even 1 BR apartments have 1.5 baths. Hallways are stuck in the 1970s (but it is not an issue for me). The building has two rooftop pools. They are supposedly finishing up renovation in front of the building (but as of now, it is a construction site, so noise is to be expected during the day). Although it was not perfect, I was sold on the size of the apartment and, frankly, did not have much time to look for other apartments. I turned in an application, app. fee, and $500 security deposit. The leasing manager Nancy did not even call me back for 10 days. I kept calling every day to check on the status of my application and they kept telling me that she was out of office and would get back to me. She knew I had little time and had to vacate my current apartment soon. Not having heard back, I visited and filled an application for another (much better) apartment up a block from the Irene. When I went to pick up my application and checks from the Irene, Nancy was not there. Another manager Renee tried very hard not to give me my checks/application back. She kept telling me that I had actually been approved and they were going to call me back to tell me that (which was a lie - the slot in the application that says 'Approved' was blank). Anyway, after haggling with her for awhile, she gave me my checks back. She did not even apologize for what had happened. Needless to say, it was a stressful situation. You might think, "Well, what's the big deal...Once I get approved, I don't have to deal with them." That's what I thought, but these people manage the building's day-to-day functioning. While I was waiting to get my stuff back, I witnessed a conversation between Renee and a current resident, which raised another red flag. The resident complained about how nothing ever gets done when something breaks and the management never gets back to her (just as previous reviewers had mentioned)! The manager tried to quickly get rid of her, as she saw from the corner of her eye that I was sitting there... Anyway, my bottom line is there are many other (better) options in the area (Willoughby, Highland House, the Elizabeth, etc). The neighborhood itself is great.
