Resident 2013

1/16/2014

X-posted to Yelp. Please, please, please save your time, money, and heartache and DON'T LIVE HERE! Let me admit that I thought I knew what I was getting into when I signed my lease at the Biltmore. I read the Yelp reviews. They sounded bad, but I convinced myself that the relatively cheap rent (for Capitol Hill that is-- rent is still a killing) was worth it. After all, where else could I get such a large hardwood studio for 900 dollars a month? I had heard Bill, the manager was ineffective at best and a bit crazy at worst. Still, people said he had a good heart. Bill also mentioned that the reviews were quite old and things had changed. I really wanted to believe him. As long as the building manager seemed somewhat legit, I figured that mattered more than the fact that the management company was a scam. So, I convinced myself to move in. I lasted three months. Here's why. 1. My fridge broke. Bill replaced after about two weeks. I noticed that when the repairmen were in that my kitchen towel had been used to wipe up the fridge grease. EW. I went to Bill, who was sympathetic. However, it gets worse. The repairmen had to come in again. I then noticed then that MY LAPTOP HAD BEEN LOGGED INTO. Bill admitted he had not been in the apartment as he should have been because he trusted the guy. At first Bill was very apologetic but later tried to rationalize the incident. Later, I found MY LIPSTICK HAD BEEN USED. EW EW EW. Bill WAS nice enough to change the lock, but I felt very sick at this point. 2. The characters in the building are quite sketchy. When I applied, there was absolutely no background or credit check. I was approved on the spot. I'm assuming that's why. 3. Bill does indeed try his best, but he's a pawn of the system. He has health difficulties and gets stressed very easily. Although he has a kind heart, I get the sense that he very taxed by his job, and as a result, sometimes he is in a great mood, and sometimes he is in a very bad mood (think: yelling). When I moved out, Bill almost refused to do a walkthrough with me. I felt bad bothering him, but I needed to get the walkthrough done, for my sake. He got very angry and yelled at me before acquiescing-- it was unsettling. 4. After I moved out, I was mistakenly charged $150 for leaving a bed by the dumpster that I did not leave. I moved out on the first, and I have NO IDEA how management thought it was me. To his credit, Bill was very nice and advised me to call the management company. I did. Many times. It took about two months and a debt collector calling me for the charge to be removed. You know what I think? I think management routinely does this because they know people are too tired to fight back. After three months in this apartment, this management company has my $600 deposit and countless amounts of stress. I read the reviews. I thought it would be ok-- I lied to myself. Please don't waste your time.
