I Recommend Monterra

// Note: I wrote this review before management switched from SJ Management to Sares-Regis Group in Apr 2006. I have not had enough interaction with the new management team to comment on their conduct. //

If you want to live somewhere on the east side of central Phoenix, I recommend Monterra. I moved to Phoenix five months ago from the eastern U.S., and this apartment has been a convenient stepping stone to get acquainted with the nuances of the city and to look for an even better apartment. I plan to move to a more convenient and attractive location in a few months based my own preferences, but Monterra has been a satisfactory choice.

Monterra is in a convenient spot next to a major highway and major streets. Traffic noises don't tend to bother me unless I have the windows open at night. As for neighbors, I guess it's a hit-or-miss anywhere you go, but my neighbors are all very quiet except for the ones who live below me. I've had to knock on their door several times when their bass was thumping on my floor.

Coming from a smaller town out of state, I was a little skeptical about the safety of this area, but I haven't encountered anybody unpleasant or threatening at Monterra. It is definitely not in an area in which you'd take a walk for enjoyment, but neither are most neighborhoods in central Phoenix. You won't be walking far in Phoenix anyway; you'll most likely hop in your car to go anywhere you'd ever want to go. Surrounded by the highway and two busy streets, Monterra is not within walking distance to any public park or hiking trail. I don't feel threatened to walk within the property at night. In fact, there are a good number of dog owners who stroll around after sundown.

Parking may become an issue if you plan to rent an apartment with two or more people. Monterra assigns one covered parking space to one-bedroom renters and assigns a garage space to two- and three-bedroom renters. Monterra might only assign one parking space per unit (not per car or per resident)... so be sure to look into this when talking with the leasing office. The covered parking space for a one-bedroom renter is adequate as long as no idiot parks in your spot. The garage space for the multi-bedroom renters is a perk, but it will be a nightmare if you have a large car (truck, SUV, 70's oldsmobile) because your car will not fit all the way in for the garage door to close. You should measure to make sure your car will fit if you have anything larger than a full-size sedan.

The office staff and maintenance crew have been very helpful on every occasion I needed their help. I've had problems with my A/C unit several times, but they've been very responsive to my requests. Some tenants seem to complain about the staff, but I think, like any human being, the staff will respond accordingly to your attitude and conduct.

I'm sure you can find an apartment with better parking or better location or better service or better this & that, but it's never that easy to find a place with the best of everything within a price range. I think Monterra falls somewhere between "Okay" and "Very Good" in my book.

**If you're from out of state, seriously consider signing the shortest lease possible so you can move again to an even better place. You know how difficult it is to find a good apartment in person... You are kidding yourself if you think you'd be able to find your perfect apartment through the Internet.
