Resident 2006 - 2007

5/12/2009

I was freshly single and decided I wanted a place that was within 5 miles or so of my job. Rillito Village was the best of all the ones I checked out, and the quietest of the ones I visited late on a Sat night. The plusses were: 1. The price was good, plus they gave 10% off if you paid on the 1st and never missed. I never did. So I got a free month out of my 1-yr lease. 2. Also, the other places I looked at that offered free utilities charged you at least $75-85 more a month. My elec. bill never reached $75 a month, though, being a single guy, I slept with open windows and the patio screen door half-open if I didn't have company :) 2. The location was good, on a main arterial and within walking distance of a Fry's, with Wal-Mart and other places about a mile away. I was also a serious cyclist then, and it offered easy access to the Mountain Avenue Bikeway and the Rillito hiker-biker path. 3. The skylight helped considerably keeping the winter heating bill low. 4. They were pretty fair about the final inspection when I moved out. 5. They were pretty quiet for the most part. 6. The staircase location between the bldgs (I was on the 2nd floor) keeps noise down, and also made moving in and out easy. The minuses were: 1. I started getting leaks from the skylight and the roof in the winter. They showed up after a 1/4 inch rain, and the new maint. guy wasn't very interested in fixing it. They weren't a problem during the heavy monsoon that summer, so I figure the former maint. guy cleared the roofs or did some procedure and the new guy didn't want to expend the effort. 2. My car was broken into once. To be fair, I may have left the window partially down or the door not fully locked. Nevertheless, it hasn't happened at other places I've lived when I forgot to secure the vehicle at night. Part of the problem is that the southernmost lot and bldgs have a walkway just outside the wall frequented by transients and street people. There wasn't a crime problem apart from that. In fact, I checked the TPD crime stats, and Rillito Village was far lower than other complexes within a mile of 1st and Prince. 3. The skylights keep your A/C running in the summer. 4. The 1-bedroom apt is pretty small - OK for single guy or gal but too small for a couple. As renewal loomed, I was getting remarried, and we needed a larger place - their 2-bedrooms were too small. If I was single, I'd have renewed but only IF they got serious about fixing/maintaining the roof.
