Takes some getting used to...but can't beat location

I have lived in City Heights for 2 years now, and all the positive and negative reviews are correct. Let me explain: essentially, this place is not easy to live in unless you have a little luck and know how to "work the system" so to speak.

Most the rental staff is incompetent, but the one person who is actually doing their job there is Martil. If you are thinking of renting at City Heights make sure you get her as your rental agent and she'll take care of you properly. But if you get anyone else--forget it, it will be a nightmare. I know, because I have signed 2 separate leases here and the first time it was terrible, but the second time with Martil it went very smoothly with no problems whatsoever.

Yes, there are shady people who live in this complex, and homeless people do come and go through the gates like it's nothing. So, yes, you do have to be aware of your personal safety. I would not recommend walking around in the neighborhood where City Heights is located at night. But it is what it is--Koreatown is kind of --------you just have to accept it. The best thing to do is to just keep to yourself and keep to your apartment and the grounds as much as possible.

Also, the parking situation can be difficult. But if you're lucky you might get a good parking spot. It really depends. So if you want to live here--pray for a good one. My first time living there I got a ------ spot, but the second time I was assigned I got a spot conveniently next to the elevator. Go figure.

Lastly, in terms of noise level--yes, it is a very noisy building so expect that. There are families and a lot of dubious construction goes on nearby all the time. Do not live here if you are a light sleeper. Personally, I am a heavy sleeper and I like to hear the noise of a city so it doesn't bother me at all, but when a friend stayed with me who is a light sleeper the noise drove her crazy. So it really depends on your sleeping habits. Also, if you are thinking of renting here, try to get a place that is on the corner. It's much quieter that way. I have a corner place and it's quite nice only having neighbors on one side of me.

On the upside, the tennis courts in the building are really great. I play tennis there quite often and even use the gym. It's not a great gym, but it's a gym nonetheless.

Oh, and yes, I would not keep anything of value in your apartment. I know it sounds silly, but there is a problem with break-ins. But I never really worry about them, because I'm poor and I really don't have anything of value in my apartment. If anyone ever stole anything from me it wouldn't be much of a loss--at least for me. But if you do have many possessions of sizable value I would definitely look for another place that was more secure than City Heights.

Overally, the location is great--situated on the edge of LA, but still close enough to Hollywood to be very accessible. It's practically 1 block away from the 101 freeway, which is great for getting to the Valley as well. It's not a great place to live, but if you're on a budget and not too picky about your living surroundings it's not too bad.
