Resident 2003 - 2005

7/31/2005

I have to agree with everything written in the 7/27/2005 review. I experienced almost all the same issues while living in the Americana, right down to dealing with Melody.

In fact she was the one who originally told me that she'd put in a maintenance order to fix the bedroom patio door so that it could open without using all my strength. She herself was unable to open it during the tour. This was before I moved in and wasn't fixed for 2 years even after several maintenance orders to do so. Eventually, a screw attaching the handle just sheared from the needed force used to open and shut the door to help allow so air in the stuffy apartment.

There were always maintenance issues in my newly renovated apartment. The toilet was constantly clogging. Right after I moved in the plumber told me he thought that the renovators had shoved excess linolium down it. The garbage disposal leaked into its cabinet, even after being fixed. (How much does it cost to replace the washer!?) The elevator was almost always making an extremely loud vibration noise whenever it went to the third floor. This issue was "fixed" several times but always came back within a month. It was so lound it could be heard outside the building from at least 100m. The washers and driers were constantly breaking. One of the three driers in the building wouldn't even warm your clothes for the whole 2 yrs I lived there. No amount of maintenance requests would fix this or really any of the above. You really get the sense that they don't care at all about what their residence think once they have signed the lease.

Some pickier issues that just bugged me were the shower's protective white tile coating pealed off to reveal some disgusting tile. Also the apartment above me did some project with glitter which covered my patio. I cleaned it up the best I could with a broom, but the cleaners would never come with a hose to spray it out of the textured surface. This just meant that I had to track glitter into the apartment whenever I used my patio. I didn't care to use my patio too much anyhow because of all the noise from trucks and people hanging out and smoking in the parking lot. (When they're out there or anyone in the apartments near you are smoking then once you open the door your apartment will smell like smoke.)

All the comments about thin walls and noise are very true. This is what eventually drove me out of the apartment. The neighbor on my bedroom's side tried to be courteous, but the walls were so thin that any music at night would keep me up since it sounded like I was playing it in my own room. The neighbor on my other side liked to bounce a ball off the wall starting at about 10pm. He would stop once I asked him to, but would start again the next night. The final straw was some students who moved in across the hall (it seemed like every 4-6 months they moved someone new into that apartment). They would have parties until 2am even during the weekdays. They generally weren't loud during the party so nothing much could be done about them, but afterwards they'd come out completely smashed and yell, scream, and bang on the hallway walls and doors and brag about the DUI they just got. Nice people.

As you can probably guess, the apartments and amenities seem nice during the tour. In fact there are some decent parts to the complex. However, it's really not worth putting up with all the crap that comes along with it.
