Resident 2009 - 2010

3/9/2010

OK besides the roaches

I lived here from May 2009- february 2010 in the "West" building. I picked this place because it was close to campus and reasonably priced (at least for Boulder). I'll start with the Pros. Lots of parking, but you MUST have a permit or you WILL get booted. This does keep people who don't live here from parking so there is plenty of room. But sucks when you have visitors who have to park out on the street. Never had a problem with cars being broken into that I knew about either. Another pro is like I said before its close to campus. It was about a 20 min walk to the UMC. Cons: They shut the water off ALL the time without giving notice. Its awful! My apartment (on the 3rd floor) was SO hot all the time. I never figured out why. During the summer it was between 80-90 degrees. Sleeping was miserable even with the air conditioning on because it was located in the living room. It was nice during the winter because I never had to turn on the heat and it was in the 70-80 degree range. So that saved me some money. I doubt that it is this way in all the apartments, but it was weird. No porches and windows are all facing the walkway- no privacy. Also my windows didn't lock. I told the office about it all she said to me was that the whole window would have to be replaced since the locks were broken off and someone would come look at it. No one ever came and my windows remained without locks. A lot of shady characters live here because the rent is so cheap, and I would have felt a lot safer with locks on the window. And the office staff, although nice, are no help. She lost my paperwork when I first moved in with social security number and all my personal info on it. She's an airhead, but like I said friendly. Now to the worst part of living here: the cockroaches and bed bugs. We noticed the bed bugs first. We knew they came from the apartment because we've had the same mattress and never had them until moving in. They can live in the carpet and floor boards so watch out! The cockroaches showed up later. I almost cut my lease early because I couldn't take it. And no I wasn't messy, I think they came from the filthy neighbors. The exterminator came in every week for about two months until they were gone. I never wanted to go home when the cockroaches were there. It was disgusting. I recommend getting some roach bait if you move in here. Its cheap and will save you from the agony I went through. I had nightmares about them for weeks after. So to conclude, this place served its purpose and then I got the heck out of there. As a poor college student I couldn't ask for more, but if you can afford it go somewhere else like out of Boulder. This is definitely not a long term place to live, but worked fine for the nine months I was there. Good luck and I hope this helps!
