Resident 2013 - 2014

11/19/2014

When I first moved to DC I was in a hurry to find an apartment. I got accepted into my program at American University only a week and a half before I had to start classes. After searching online I thought the Berkshire, being only a block from campus, was a godsend. I was so excited to find an apartment I could afford with a full kitchen. Well, I moved in and the first thing I found out was that there were no outlets in my beloved kitchen, which was the only reason I was paying almost $1600 a month for a studio. I have Celiac's disease so I have to make a lot of simple pleasures like french fries, onion rings, and pizza on my own so the thought of not having my toaster oven and deep fryer brought me to tears. Sounds ridiculous, but I am a total foodie. My parents had to buy me a buffet and massive power strip to put in the dining area so I could use them. Then I found that one burner on my stove didn't work. They did come next day, but it worked when they turned it on so they didn't look for a problem. I continued to have trouble with it the entire year I lived there. They did the same thing with the lock to the door, which sometimes got so stiff I couldn't get into my apartment. The toilet would spit water every time someone in an apartment above flushed (and there were 8 floors above me), yet somehow passed an inspection. Then there were the cockroaches. Never assume a bug is just an earwig. One day I thought I was only seeing earwigs, which are typical with rainy days, and the next I was turning around from the alfredo I was cooking to find three of them on top of my gourmet tomatoes. I didn't cook for a month, which meant I ate very little for a month and Whole Foods made a lot of money, money I didn't have because I was shelling out $1600 of my ~$1825 stipend each month for rent. Needless to say, by the time I moved out after my lease was up I dreaded going home at night.
