Resident 2002

A nice home

After reading so many horrific reviews for apartments in DC and hearing other horror stories, I realized how lucky I am to have such a great apartment at such a low price (compared to other apartments in DC and the suburbs anyway).

Our one-bedroom apartment is quite roomy with lots of windows, including a window in the bathroom which is quite nice. I´ve seen so many apartments with just a few windows in the living room and one window in the bedroom. Not so here. The one bedrooms have a wall of windows in the living room, two big windows in the bedroom, and one window in the bathroom.

The management has always been very prompt in replying to our maintenance requests and we haven´t had any problems with the appliances or anything. We had a leak in our faucet and they tore out the wall, replaced the fixtures, and repaired it completely in about 72 hours (and it was a HUGE job).

The apartment complex is built VERY solidly. We never hear anything from our neighbors...not even those who live above us (and it isn´t because they´re quiet, it´s simply because the floors are built really sturdy.

One thing I would DEFINITELY recommend is getting an apartment with parquet floors. That is what we have and they are really nice. I´ve been in apartments here with carpet and it´s really old and dirty. I would NOT recommend a carpeted apartment.

The apartments also seem really reasonably priced. For our 800 square-foot apartment, we´re paying far less than people with 500 square foot apartments in other areas. This may be because the building is not near a Metrorail Station. (Though buses stop across the street and many other nearby locales).

I LOVE the area. It´s definitely THE BEST thing about this building. It has a great small neighborhood feel while it´s right on the edge of Georgetown with plenty of shopping and restaurants just a two minute walk from home.

There is a Fresh Fields a block away and a Safeway just two or three blocks away. Friends who live here and don´t have cars have no problem getting anywhere because they just take the bus there or take the bus to the Tenleytown Metro Station.

Although there aren´t washers or dryers in the apartments, the laundry room is HUGE and even on a Sunday night when nearly everyone is doing laundry, there isn´t too much of a problem getting machines.

The negatives (and they don´t really matter to me or my roommate) are these:

1. The appliances are old. There aren´t dishwashers in the apartments. THe kitchens are small, even in the one bedrooms.

2. The bathrooms are tiny and there is NO counter space.

3. The closets are fairly small. Our one bedroom has an entry closet, a big closet with shelves, a closet for clothes outside the bathroom and a narrow closet in the bedroom. No walk-in or spacious closets here. Though since there are FOUR good sized closets, it does not really matter. My roommate and I share the closet space and it´s still more than sufficient.

4. No swimming pool.

5. No balconies.

6. Wisconsin Ave. is a loud, busy, hectic street at all hours of the day and night. If you live in a street-side apartment on a lower level, be forewarned of the noise...though the windows are pretty sound-proof when closed.

7. Tiny work-out room that´s cramped and dank and shoved away in the basement.

8. No garage parking (a friend has been on the wait-list for an underground space since January and hasn´t gotten one yet!). Though there is plenty of street parking as long as your car IS registered in DC.

9. The only cable outlet in the entire huge apartment is above the front door...which basically means you must wind the cable all over the apartment to get it where your tv is.

10. Only one phone outlet...again by the front door.

11. Not that many electrical outlets. A few more in the living/dining area would be useful.

Well, that´s my perspective. If you´re on a budget and don´t mind doing without certain apartment amenities, this is a FANTASTIC place to live.
