Resident 2005

great place if you love trash

It's hard to know where to begin...

First, there are no private entrances. There is one main hallway per floor that gives off a very dorm-like atmosphere. The hallway is constantly filled with trash (small pieces or even whole bags), random bits of furniture (tvs, speakers), small children and their toys, and even pieces of used cat litter. The hall also has a certain odor that is by no means pleasant.

Also about odor, all of the air conditioning units seem to be connected. If someone is cooking a strong-scented meal (garlic, etc) or smoking, the scent will fill your apartment whenever the air comes on.

About the noise. There are often small children running around unattended throughout the complex and in the street. They (and their parents calling them to dinner) can be very noisy. There is a woman who lives on the first floor who walks her dog at all hours of the night. She feels the best way to get her dog to listen is to shout at it repeatedly, even at 5 am. She can be heard quite clearly from the second floor while inside our apartment with the telvision on. She wakes us up often. Also, people like to shout from apartment-to-apartment, or down to the street.

We would also like to note that Advance Auto Parts & Tires Plus are in the same parking area as The Dunes. They frequently have the radio playing loudly, and you can hear them changing tires and when the PA system in use. They frequently get deliveries at 4-5 am which involves a semi backing into a very tight space. This beep-beep-beep noise usually goes on for about an hour. Then you get to hear them load everything into the warehouse.

Maintenance has been spotty. Our burned-out lights and difficult to open mailbox were fixed quickly. Our oven, however, is more than 100 degrees off (too hot) and has not been fixed in two months. Power often goes out for a few minutes, regardless of paid bills.

Rent is currently $750/mo without any utilities included. Washers/Dryers are an additional $1.25 each, and rent will be jumping to $900/mo in 2006 for supposed "grounds work." $900 for a 2-bed, 1-bath, 740 sq. ft. apartment. We are leaving as soon as our lease is up, and would not suggest The Dunes. Though we've decorated nicely, we don't even like to invite friends over.

The one good thing we can say is that this place could survive a major hurricane: the walls are so hard that thumbtacks bend against the drywall, and pushpins have to be nailed into place.
