Resident 2014 - 2015

4/30/2015

I noticed there aren't a lot of through reviews, so here is mine: I lived in a one bedroom with a sun room instead of a patio. Personally, I would rather have a patio because I find the sun room space to be awkward. I can see it being a good little nursery perhaps or a reading nook, but other than it's just a waste of space. I converted mine into a closet because the bedroom closet was way too small for two people. The living room and dining room area is spacious and easily fit my four person dining table and my L shaped couch. The bar counter on the kitchen is far too small for today's bar chairs, but some small stools could likely fit nicely. The laundry room/pantry is large. Functionality is not great as I find it odd to have your food in with your dirty clothes; but to each their own. My laundry room holds my front loaders and cleaning supplies with some left over space for odds and ends storage. This is the only storage area in the apartment. The kitchen is okay. It's midsize for an apartment but very dated. The refrigerator is compact, the stove old, and the dishwasher struggles to wash. There is limited counter space; so keep that in mind if you have a mixer, blender, toaster, microwave, and coffee maker. You will have to store some things in the cabinets. As to the bedroom, it is an average size and will hold a queen bed, chest of drawers, and small desk/tv stand. However, I warn you, good luck with the furniture positioning because it is difficult to arrange things without blocking a window or door. I finally gave up and just put the bed in front of the french door with a curtain rod over it so the doors weren't visible. The closet is not a bad size for someone who is not a frequent shopper. For two people, one with a large amount of shoes, bags, and clothing it is way too small. (Hence the sunroom conversion to a closet) Plus, there is no linen closet so those must go into the clothes closet. The bathroom is located off the bedroom. This is quite awkward when you have people over because they must walk through your bedroom. The bathroom has one sink, but a large counter. There is plenty of storage underneath and there are some shelves in the corner that are perfect for holding toiletries and towels. The tub is standard, but large enough to take a bath in if you squeeze. The water pressure is fantastic if you prefer showers. The carpet in our unit is not great. They cleaned it before we moved in, but it's still shoddy. You can tell the unit has been painted multiple times and they have painted over the doors, cabinets, and wall fixtures The noise level is pretty standard for apartment living. We can hear our neighbors, they can hear us. The walls aren't too thin, but thin enough to know when someone is having a fight, draining their tub, using the washing machine, running the disposal, working out in their living room, or having.... adult time. I imagine the noise level would depend a lot on your neighbor's lifestyle. We are on the 2nd floor so we still hear plenty, but it's manageable. You can also hear people in the breezeways. So, don't think you can go out and have a convo on your phone without the whole building hearing you. There are several dogs in our building, which aren't too loud. But you can certainly hear them barking from time to time. Maintenance is hit and miss. Our AC was out for two weeks in spring and it took them forever to come and fix it. Make your requests online because I don't think the office ever checks their phone messages. Another problem we have had is maintenance coming in our apartment and not leaving a notice. One day I was in the shower and didn't hear the knock on the door. They came in anyway. I got out of the shower, thinking I heard something and thought the mister came home, and to my surprise there were three maintenance men standing my living room. I was not happy. They never apologized for that incident and i was jumpy for weeks after. Another time I came home and someone had knocked over pictures on my TV stand. I called the next day, because there had been no notice of maintenance in my apartment, and sure enough someone had been in the apartment looking at the cable. Strange. Safety wise, the neighborhood is great. We have had no issues at all. I feel safe walking around after dark and have never seen anything sketch. Lynn Haven Police does a courtesy patrol and there are also other law enforcement agents that actually live in the complex. As far as bugs go, I have seen a few here and there but it's not bad at all. I spray my own apartment once a month and they also do pest control. There are bugs roaming in the breezeways so watch out for those getting in. Other issues, I got a trash fine after setting my trash out my door for about 15 minutes. I had been sick and set it out so it didn't smell up the apartment with vomit. While disinfecting the apartment, I set the trash out and within minutes I had a fine. Annoying, but admirable they enforce the rules I guess. The pool is great. Always clean and welcoming. The lounge chairs are uncomfortable, so I bring my own. The gym is okay. It has everything I need, although it's somewhat dated. The park looks good for kids, and the bark park looks cute for the dogs. If you're a runner, the loop around the complex is nice and there are plenty of sidewalks. The Electric runs about $170 in the summer for a one bedroom with two people. In winter, it's about $70. Water runs about $40-50. Overall, the apartment isn't horrible. The rent was about half of what we paid before in Atlanta, so that was nice. While it's not shiny and new, the location is great. You are close to several stores and gas stations. There are restaurants close by if you're not in the mood to dive all over. I wouldn't live here again as there were too many little things that added up to warrant a move. The weird maintenance issues coupled with the crummy apartment layout ruined it for me.
