Resident 2013 - 2014

9/19/2014

My dog died and they refused to refund my pet deposit. -He was 16.5 yrs old and had stones. -I signed the lease with the intentions of having him at Coconut Palms but he was so frail, I decided it would be better to have him stay at my boyfriend's place, where we were living initially. It was closer to the vet and down the street from my boyfriend's work so he could check on him several times a day whereas I was stuck at work for 8 hours and that was 1.5 hrs away. -In the end, he died of kidney failure and I notified the leasing office that I wasn't going to have him there. -I was not charged the pet rent for the entire 12 months of my lease but I was so distraught that I forgot I had paid a $300 deposit. Only when I moved out did I find this receipt stating the charge. -The fact that I didn't pay pet rent wasn't enough to convince them that it was on the record I didn't have my dog and that I should get my deposit back. -They can scour my apartment for fur and they will not find one hair. -Brownie was gone, that should have been reason enough. I spoke with Felix, who was kind and understanding. He advised me to speak with the manager, Anna. -She told Felix to pass on the message that it was the policy that the deposit is non-refundable and it was difficult to argue because of the fact that "it took the whole year" to say something. -I already mentioned to Felix that I forgot about the deposit and she couldn't even understand how much distress someone goes through when they lose someone. -The receipt I showed Felix wasn't even crinkled, it was in pristine condition because it was at the bottom of a pile for an entire year, untouched, forgotten. -Anna didn't believe me but why would someone lie about the life of someone so dear? I'll never have my baby back but they didn't have to insult me and be so callous. -------------------------- On another note, here are the details of the apartment. I got a corner, first floor, 1 bdrm, 1 bath for $699/mo. Even though it was at the corner, I didn't have extra windows. -The walls are thin, you can hear people next door and upstairs talking, walking, playing music, etc. -The community is loud, lower income, unsafe. I kept wooden dowels in the tracks of my 2 windows. -The appliances are older, no microwave. I got new laminate flooring but they kept the old dingy carpet. -Bathroom sink/counter was visible from the kitchen and on the way to the bedroom. Only the toilet and shower had a door for privacy and it was super tiny. -I reported that I could only use two of the burners on the stove because the other two were too smokey, they replied that it must be old oil grease caked into the stove and to let it burn out (???) -When I moved in, I found hair and food crumbs in the drawers from the previous tenants and constantly had roaches. -There was a storage unit in the screened patio area but didn't have a lock. -I reported that I needed some things fixed (flooding/leaking dishwasher, privacy screen missing in patio, mold under the bathroom sink) and it took multiple reports to have something done about it. They asked if it's ok for Maintenance enter when you're not at home. I consented but they left my backdoor unlocked and a cigarette butt on my patio. When I reported that, Anna said it must have been from the upstairs tenants and probably dropped down through their patio floor. My upstairs neighbors didn't smoke. She ignored my comment. I retracted my consent to have them in my apartment without my presence. -When I first moved in, we had "maintenance" checkups all the time! Someone would come in during a span of a few days whether or not you were at home--sometimes an electrician, sometimes to check the fire extinguisher, who knows what else. -I've also had outages of water, who you pay through them. Good thing was the bill was pretty cheap. -The gym is an extra charge and only 2 machines work. -You can only pay rent by check, online is an extra charge of $8 or something. $12 for trash, $5 for "admin fee" every month. -Lease states you have until the 3rd to pay rent or get charged $50. Once, I paid on the 3rd because I was busy at work and got charged a late fee. They said it had to be on the 3rd BY 10 AM. I had to argue that the lease didn't state a "time" and had to wait for an "approval" from Anna.
