LIARS AND CROOKS
At the beginning of the year (around February), I went to Tortuga Bay because I was interested in an apartment there. I worked with a leasing consultant named -----, and I told her that I needed an apartment in May. Throughout the next few months, she helped me find an apartment that I liked, and I authorized her to charge me the $100 holding fee, which, I was told, will hold the exact apartment that I want, for the exact date that I need it, and for the price that it's listed for at the time that it's put on hold. We emailed back and forth, and she told me that she was holding the specific apartment that I had requested (a first floor one-bedroom with a garage) for May 21st at the price that it was listed for at the time I requested to put it on hold (which was $920/month). I show up at the leasing office the morning of May 21st all ready to move in.... and one of the other leasing consultants informs me that they were still waiting for corporate to approve the price of the apartment. I told her that ----- had said that it was already being held for $920 for the 21st. She talked to the managers on duty, -----------------, and they told me that ----- had made a mistake and corporate would not approve that price, and if I still wanted the apartment, I would have to pay the current price which was now $1020. I asked them to please talk to corporate and explain the entire situation because, after all, none of this was my fault. The leasing agent had made the mistake, why should I pay for it? She told me that they were holding the apartment when they really weren't! Also, they couldn't tell me this in advance before the day I show up with all of my stuff and set up all of my utilities for that address and everything?! They swore they talked to corporate and said they wouldn't budge on the rent price. I had nowhere else to go at that point, it was already too late to find another comparable apartment, so I felt trapped and had to sign the lease at $1020/month. After getting all settled in, I called corporate, and they told me that they hadn't talked to anyone from any Orlando apartments recently. Come to find out, Tortuga didn't even talk to corporate, they only called the regional office. So now I'm trying to plead my story to corporate to see if they'll honor the original price that I was promised the apartment would be held for. In the meantime, Tortuga is pressuring me into signing a legal release form that means I won't be able to sue them or even talk about what happened. Be very careful if you're thinking about moving here! They don't keep their word, and apparently they can change the price at the last minute without even telling you in advance, even if you tell them to put the apartment on hold at a time when the price is lower.Share This Review
