Resident ā€¢ 2011

8/25/2011

I have no idea how college student can afford to live here, but they are here. It's that time of year again. I've lived here a little over two weeks now, but so far this place is really impressive. The pool area is beautiful, with plenty of deck chair room. There's an outdoor grill (huge) for public use in the pool area. There's an outdoor kitchen, but it's just a couple of mini fridges and a sink or two. That way you can go grab a drink if you have some friends over or are mingling with the neighbors. It's really nice. The clubhouse is really spacious and beautiful. There's fridges in there, if you want to sit and drink a glass of wine with friends and watch tv you can. There's always freshly made cookies up for grabs--there's usually a good variety, too. I've never eaten any of them, but they look delicious. The kitchen is beautiful, the walls are thick--no noise whatsoever from my neighbors, and the trash is really convenient--it gets picked up right outside my door 2-3 times per week. So far, the staff is really nice, and lets me correspond with them via email or phone. I've had two incidents with cockroaches so far. The first time, I called up the office and complained--it was the day after I moved in and a huge cockroach ran through my living room. The next day, they came and sprayed all over the apartment. Whatever they used must not have worked because later that same day, another huge roach skittered across my kitchen floor. That was about two weeks ago and I've had no issues since. If I weren't in the market to buy a house in the next 11 months, I would definitely consider making this place my permanent home. But with housing prices in the area the way they are, I can get a house for only a little more per month than I'm paying here. When I tell people how much I'm paying, their eyebrows always shoot up and they can't help but comment on it. I've tried to find a roommate, but can't for this price. No one wants to pay $560 half utilities to live in a two bedroom apartment. I can't blame them. There's a small dog park, and a car wash station right here at the complex. The car wash station has a brush with all your normal wash/wax/rinse features, and a vacuum. They take quarters only. I wish this place had dead bolts on the doors, so that if you loan someone a key to watch your pet or something, you know they can't just walk in unannounced whenever they feel like it. I had thought a place like this would have security systems in the apartments, even if for an extra fee, but they don't. Just the one lock on your door, and that's all you get. There's a stacked washer/dryer unit in the apartment which works really well. I wish there was a fabric softener dispenser in the washer, but I'll survive. There is a "pet fee" here which is non refundable and pretty steep--I will be waiting 'til I buy a house to get some kittens. For one pet it is $400, and for two pets it is $600. There is no pet rent after that--just the one-time fee, no matter how long you live here. My two biggest pros and cons: Pro: The price, and the distance from the local colleges, keeps the "riff raff" out. There's no loud parties going on, or scary people walking around in wife beaters and saggy jeans, or apartments with 10 people trying to live in a 2 bedroom playing fiesta music all night. Most of the people living here seem to be stay at home wives, studious students, or working professionals like myself. Con: The gate. There is a sign at the gate saying "caution: gate closes after each vehicle!" but it's bluffing, and everyone knows it. There's some sort of safety feature which keeps the gate from closing when it senses another vehicle approaching--likely for liability reasons. People piggyback on residents all the time to get access to the pool, car washing station, dog park, etc. Also, it's annoying when you don't want company. Just the other day, one of my friends tried to come visit me unannounced. When I didn't let them in via the call box, they just piggybacked their way in and knocked on my door. They need to stop bluffing with their sign, and have the gate close immediately after each vehicle, period. We are paying enough to live here that no one that isn't invited should be able to just come in whenever they feel like it and use the facilities for free that we're paying to use.
