Resident 2013

9/20/2013

Not a safe or sanitary apartment complex. First time I have lived in a complex with 0% care of the residents safety and concerns. Where do I even start? My boyfriend and I lived in a smaller unit for about 1 1/2 years. In that unit, mold was a constant problem. If we would call the office, the maintenance man would show up (if you were lucky) and just repaint over the walls which only lead to the mold showing up again months later. The cycle did not end. Part of the problem was the way the air conditioner was set up. It was a wall unit and even when constantly running, humidity in the apartment was pretty bad. The ceilings in these buildings are very, very thin. I heard footsteps that sounded like stomping constantly and I could hear the upstairs neighbor every time he had a girl upstairs and they... well, you know. Not exactly what I want my toddler hearing. Thankfully, the fan in the bathroom was so noisy that if we slept with it on it would cover most of the noise. Things went from uncomfortable to unbearable when we decided to upgrade to a larger unit. We applied to many other apartment complexes but got denied due to a charge from 5 years ago on my boyfriend's record. Pine Tree is the only place that we found was not bothered by this apparently (hmmm?). We felt we just needed more space so we grudgingly signed a new lease for another year in a bigger model. When we moved in, the place was infested with German roaches. I mean, I have lived in Florida my whole life and, yes, roaches are an occasional thing even in a clean house. This was like a horror movie scene the first time I walked into the kitchen in the middle of the night to find literally a dozen roaches all over the kitchen floor and counters. I was mortified. Please, let me add that I am pregnant and again, I do have a toddler. Besides the fact that it is disgusting and roaches carry diseases, I don't want my kids to be around any roach infestation. We have tried everything, traps, bleaching the counters and floor every few days and then cleaning everything with all-purpose cleaner every day. They live underneath the cabinets (you can see the holes they crawl from) so we cannot seem to eradicate them completely. So just about every other night I will happen to still catch at least a half dozen of them of various ages (babies to adults) wandering around our kitchen and have even seen more than I should have in one of the bathrooms. Speaking of bathrooms, about a week after living in this unit one of the bathrooms developed a leak... the ceiling above the tub started collapsing because of it. We called, they tried to patch it up with cheap plaster that you could tell was used there before to try to cover up the problem. Of course, a few days later the ceiling there collapsed again. They came in and said it was a leaky pipe and they would fix it. They cut a hole about 2x3 above the tub to do this. They left the hole there, only covering it with a black garbage bag. For over a month, we asked them to come fix the hole as this was my daughter's bathroom and I didn't feel safe without a steady roof over the tub for her. They never came. After a few months, the leak (I say leak but sometimes it is a steady stream of water) started again and the plastic garbage bag they taped there wasn't cutting it. Meanwhile, we have not been able to use this tub so we are paying for a 2br2bth and asked that they offer some concession on rent due to insufficient maintenance, they told us, "We wish we could, but we can't". It's not even about the money. They came about 2 weeks ago after we begged them to come look at the leak and the maintenance man then claimed it was the upstairs neighbors splashing too much water on the floor. He said he would be back to fix the hole and never came back but left the plastic garbage bag there half hanging. Now we have ants, spiders, slugs, and roaches falling into this tub as well as random debris. In addition to all this not working, they allow 10 (I have counted) people to live in the apartment above us and you should HEAR the stomping that goes on just about 24/7. Again, we leave the bathroom fans on to help with the noise but in this apartment it does not nearly cover the noise as well. These upstairs neighbors have a camera monitoring the parking lot which they claim is because of frequent break-ins. (As you previously may have read from other posts, the gates do not work). And as others have stated, if you have something break in your apartment it will most likely NEVER get fixed. In our first apartment here we went months without a properly working fridge. In this apartment, a spring broke on our dishwasher so the door slammed on me one day and I fell back against the fridge (again, I am pregnant so it was very scary). After the spring broke, the dishwasher somehow gets pieces of particle board all over our dishes which is obviously a health hazard. The maintenance man said he would fix it and it has been weeks. I am writing a certified letter to the complex that we are legally breaking our lease if they don't fix these issues. It is beyond ridiculous and I am due this week, should not have to deal with any of this in a normal apartment complex. I will also contact the BBB and code enforcement. Also, let me warn you about the pool. My boyfriend started breaking out in rashes every time he would use the pool here. Turns out it is because they do not take proper care of the pool (you will not even taste chlorine in the water) and every once in a while they mysteriously close the pool after it turns green. Why not just maintain it so you don't have to close it and risk the health of residents? My daughter was very disappointed when I tried to explain to her I didn't want her to use the pool because it is dirty and she really is too young to understand. A few good things: neighbors tend to be friendly and there is usually a lot of parking in the main lot.
