Resident ā€¢ 2007 - 2008

4/2/2009

I lived in the pointe for one year, and sometimes stay with friends who live here.

This is my experience:

One bedroom in a four bedroom with a 2 shared bathrooms is about 350-375.00 a month. THIS IS THE BIGGEST SELLING POINT. If you are a broke college student and living on campus or with parents isn't an option - this is the way to go.
Some other student complexes, like campus lodge, (I lived there also) dont even offer 4 bedrooms with shared baths. My rent at C.L was almost 500.00 (for a 4 x 4) a month with extra premium expenses I didnt even ask for..
The problem with the Pointe is that Low rates attracts three types of people:
1. The broke college student :) This is who SHOULD be living here. Whether you are clean, messy, noisy or just plain obnoxious - we all have one thing in common - School ! And you might be able to put up with more crap than you normally would, because you end up having a common bond with them.

2. Huge families who are weird and broke :( Now I understand times are tough and affordable housing isn't easy to come by - but why would a "Student Housing" complex have a family of four or five living in the four bedroom apartments ? - Oh i Know - bc its illegal to discriminate - yea ok, so bc they would be discriminating I have to live next to this 40 yr old man, his baby mama, and their cousins & two kids ? Oh hell no.. i dont think so .... If university dorms can say " only students allowed " - I dont see a reason why all those overly-paid corporate lawyers cant find a loophole around the whole discrimination law when it comes to student housing. Its just not safe. It can attract perverts or old people that want to relive their college days...

3. Dirty, Ratty, Nasty people :( Plain and simple. Low rent leaves more money for them to smoke more crack... yep, nasty people who bring the integrity and safety of the complex down. 99% of them - I am sure are not students.

Parking
1. They will tow. They do not care ! They want your money. Do not park anywhere it does not VISIBLY say visitor bc you will get towed and charged over 200 dollars to get your car back from the NASTIEST towing place ever. 2. Covered parking spots are your best bet. You pay extra for them. Keeps your car clean when it rains. BUT people like to say F*** IT AND PARK IN YOUR SPOT ANYWAYS. So what do you do ? You have to call the towing company yourself. They dont charge you anything to call or get the car out of your spot. You are not held liable for it, but you have to sign a slip saying you called them. As you can imagine, this sometimes causes some fights among people.

Maintenance 1. Ok, let me get one thing straight about maintenance. They are over-worked . So much damage is done by these nasty residents who don't belong here, that they are literally fixing/cleaning things everyday. The newer, younger guys sometimes slack off - but one of the guys - roberto - is a saint. If you take the time to introduce yourself and you are actually nice (not act like a snob just bc they are maint.) - they (expecially roberto) will make your time here SOO much better. I personally know him just from living at the pointe, and he always went out of his way to help me - from getting me a new matress asap in the EVENING (bc the one in the room had blood on it..) to getting me new blinds bc mine were broken... Do not let the office handle your maintence issues, they will just let you down. Take matters into your own hands !

Grounds, Safety, Etc ..
The only unsafe thing about the point is are those nasty residents. On a normal night they have one security officer - (on weekends two) - patrolling. And every night a CA is always on-call. Meaning if you have an issue - you can call them and they can call the security for you. Or if you are nice and introduce yourself to the security officers, they will give you their number and you can call them yourself if you have any trouble. P.S - The tampa police department is on the corner of 56th and fowler - you can always call them too if you thing anything bad is about to happen. The residents have the ability to make the complex safe. Dont be afraid to call the cops. Better safe then sorry.

Staff ... staff .. staff ... Some are good - some are bad. Some are students working off rent .. others are just working for the company. Some people write that the students dont care bc they are just doing it for the money. Sometimes I see that but I also know a few students who work there and actually do care. The students usually or more caring then the actual management bc they relate to your problems.
There is ONE GIRL you need to look out for - and that is Elaina. She is one of the "managers" or head people in charge. She is the most rude chick ever. I kid you not.. Apparently no one likes her, not even her co-workers. Everytime she opens her mouth, she has an attitude. She looks like she's a student, but she's actually not. She used to work for this company in a different location ( I believe its the lofts in orlando by ucf.) That is where she graduated from .. hmm.. Who are USF'S rivals again ? Oh yea .. thats right - UCF. No wonder she hates everyone .. she's in bull territory !! Really though, she is just one of those people who acts like she has the right to be a b**** to everyone prolly just because she had it rough growing up or something like that.
If she does ever read this, I do have a message for her:
1. Grow up. Your an adult. Act like one. Being rude to everyone and not monitoring what comes out of your mouth and how it comes out just shows a lack of respect for everyone you come across, and one day your gonna disrespect the wrong person.
2. You don't have to love your job, but dont allow everyone to see how miserable you are. Your job entails alot of customer service and at the very least, you should be nice and approachable.
3. Be nicer to the people you work with. I heard you have a conversation with this one guy in the office - and you were such an a** to him, I dont know how he took it as well as he did. Management should have you seriously monitored ..
On the other hand, Beatriz (bea is her nickname) - is a student who moved up to a management position. She is one of the friendliest. Deal with her, if you can. She's been their a while and knows what she is talking about.
Also be patient with the staff bc they have a high turnover rate, and alot of them are usually training and new, so they may not know all the procedures or special cases.

The Rooms The apartments themselves are a gamble. Some of them are brand new, smell great, have new carpeting and new appliances. The furniture will always be ugly, but theres nothing you can do about that. Other apartments are garbage .. and need alot of work... this is where being nice to the maintenence guys comes in handy. They can tell you which apts/bedrooms are clean w/ new furniture and which ones to stay away from !

Overrall, it is what you make of it. Clearly some things you can't control, but if money is really an issue, I would recommend it. We all have to suffer as students to get where we want to be later on in life...

But if you can afford better, definitely explore other options... Campus lodge ... or if you want to get something really nice - go for ON50... Or check out www.on50tampa.com (Luxury student housing) which is def. the nicest place by far....

Oh, and P.s They have a serious racoon problem here - I swear I saw the biggest raccoon ever the other day while I was visiting. It looked like the size of an average bulldog ... HUGE !! scared the hell outta me ...
