Resident 2012 - 2014

7/23/2014

Ok, so, here it goes. I am a female young professional and have lived here for the past 2 years. I am moving out in September to save money. If I could afford to stay, I probably would. Pros: -Location: the location is pretty bomb----. I have often walked to home depot, target, starbucks, waho, smashburger, the bank, taco mac, and more! You can also walk to Lindbergh marta and take the train anywhere marta goes. the location is something that I will miss most about this place for sure. SUPER close to 400 and I-85. very central, very awesome. If you're a runner, head north on piedmont and go into E. Wesley Road towards the Garden Hills Neighborhood--it is a GREAT area for running and very safe. -Noise: Given that some of my neighbors are kind of....sketchy, this apartment complex is remarkably quieter than what I expected. I'm not gunna say it's like, absolutely perfect and silent, but when I moved in I expected a lot of noise and it really hasn't been bad at all! There's this pre-teen black kid who likes to skateboard in the parking lot at random hours, which can be annoyingly noisy, but I got used to it. One night there was like this domestic screaming match fight that woke me up, but other than that, I've had no problems at all with noise. Maybe I just lucked out and didn't get in a building with a lot of partiers, but, that has been my experience. -Break-ins: Before I moved in I read all of these horrible, countless reviews about break-ins, especially CAR break-ins, so I was extremely worried about it at first--let me tell you--I have lived here for two years and NEVER, has my car or apartment ever been broken into. Bottom Line: Don't be an idiot. Don't leave valuables in your car, don't leave your car (or apartment) unlocked, you'll be fine. -Safety: In that same vein, safety is a pro. I probably wouldn't walk around alone at night but, in general I feel pretty safe. The fact that most of the buildings are pretty far from the road is nice, and the other side of the fence is this old folks home. The whole community has a really tall fence with wire around it, so it'd be hard for randos to just get in. -Maintenance:, in general, has been very satisfactory. They definitely don't have a 24 hour rule like a lot of complexes do, but in general they solve problems within 48 hours or so. I didn't really have to many issues, just my fridge leaking, my window leaking, and my smoke alarm chirping. -Washer-Dryer: in unit. Big plus. Every unit also has a patio which is pretty nice, but wasps like to build nests on them. The amount of apartment you get for your money is also pretty reasonable. I mean have you seen NYC apartments? -Staff: The office staff is not bad at all. I mean, they haven't BLOWN ME AWAY with niceness and knowledgeable-ness, but they also haven't done anything to royally piss me off. -Fees: I have not been hit with any crazy or hidden fees (yet). My bill is almost exactly the same, every month. Cons: -Quality: These buildings were built 24 years ago. And it shows. There have been no MAJOR updates in 24 years, so the buildings show some pretty obvious signs of aging...paint peeling, my window leaks when it rains, etc. By far my most detested part of the apartment--the -STAIRS. I live on the 3rd floor and these stairs sound like they are about to collapse right underneath you when you walk on them. And my living room wall faces the stairs so when other people go up and down them it's quite noisy. The stairs are quite terrifying. Anyway, lots of wood rot, peeling paint, etc. You get the idea. It's an old building and they try to make it look nice by re-painting it, putting in new carpet, black appliances, etc., but it's just putting lipstick on a pig. Some of these walls need to be just straight up gutted and rebuilt. -Bugs: So, that being said, old building have bugs. However, I will say that given the quality of the building, I would've expected more bugs to be honest. I am TERRIFIED of roaches and, in an entire 2 years of living here I've had to kill maybe 15 roaches. Although keep in mind I'm on the 3rd floor. I imagine it's worse on the ground floor. They have pest control and they'll come by and spray your apartment and it does help. It doesn't ERADICATE the problem, but it helps. -Price: In general, you ARE overpaying. While the price point isn't outrageous, the price point does not match the quality of these old buildings. -The Gate: Hahahahaha yeah, it rarely works. Somebody has plowed through the safety bar at least 10 times since I've lived here. VERY often, it is just stuck on "open" because it is broken in some way and they are trying to get the guy to come fix it. Not really the fault of the office staff, but, there's also no separate gate for visitors so things get backed up pretty often. If a well-working, nice gate is why you are choosing to live here, find another place. -The Fitness Center: is a f-ing joke. 2 treadmills, one stairmaster, one elliptical, and one bike. And one of the treadmills has been broken for over a year. The thermostat is STUCK on 78. I have complained several times about the broken treadmill and the thermostat to no avail. I kid you not, homeless people sneak in and sleep on the ab mats. I've seen it with my own eyes. I come in at 6:30 to work out, turn on the lights, and some homeless vagrant crawls out from behind the treadmills all sleepy eyed and walks out, and I'm like wtf was that?? -Pool: I have mixed feelings about the pool. It's pretty small and can get pretty crowded, especially on the weekends, but in general I would say it is well-maintained by the staff/maintenance crew. It's usually very clean and so is the area around it. Don't go at night in the summer--roaches everywhere!! In Conclusion - if you are just starting out and want to live alone in an affordable place, I'd say get a 3rd floor apartment w/ washer dryer and go for it! If they try to stick you in a below ground or ground floor, I'd say that's pretty risky, but it's up to you. If you have a roommate, find a nicer place.
