Resident 2010

I swear, this place must be a health hazard

I spent a single, nightmarish year at Collier Ridge, and I'm so relieved to finally be out of it. I'll try to show the few good bits, though. PROS 1) My particular building was at the top of its own little hill with its own little parking lot, and it looked down over the pool and the tennis courts. Very pretty. 2) Location. Convenient to just about everything. 3) Maintenance. I never had a problem with the maintenance, despite the several reviews that speak poorly of it. Actually, I found them to be quick and efficient. I hardly ever had to wait more than 24 hours for even the most minor correction (except for the horrendous water stains on my bathroom ceiling that were never repainted, but that's a cosmetic problem and it didn't particularly bother me). ... I think that's about it, actually. CONS 1) About half of the office. Some are very sweet and helpful. But the property manager and a gentleman whose name I don't know have been cold at best and downright condescending at worst. 2) Noise. The walls and ceiling may as well be made of rice paper. The simple act of your upstairs neighbors walking through their own apartment causes sleepless nights. Pictures rattle when people walk up the stairs. I can repeat - word for word - several conversations that my next door neighbors have had because I could literally hear them talking as if they were standing in my bathroom with me. It's not like my neighbors were particularly loud. The building is just that poorly constructed. I actually had to buy ear plugs to get any semblance of a good night's sleep. 3) Phone and internet difficulties. Maybe this was just my building, but despite the fact that a Comcast executive lives in the complex, my building wasn't wired properly for Comcast. Despite requests from several different technicians to set up a time to fix the wiring problem, they were never given permission, and the problem was never corrected. 4) Water pressure. I had extremely poor water pressure in my unit. A sprinkler would have been more effective. 5) The upkeep of the apartment itself. The appliances are old, poorly-maintained, and possibly dangerous. My gas stovetop was always hot to the touch, regardless of whether it had been used in the past few days or not. The place was filthy when I moved in; apparently, no one felt the desire to make sure it was in proper condition. And finally, the coup de grace. The bugs. Oh, dear God, the bugs. Collier Ridge is full of trees. It's halfway to a nature preserve. I'm not a fool; I know that there will be the occasional cricket or daddy long legs or mosquito. But no one should have to wake up ten minutes early to add a daily bout of bug-squishing to their morning routine like I had to do for the past year. Sure, there was the occasional cricket or spider (like the one that spun a web in my blanket while I was at work one day) that probably came in from outside. There were also these horrifying millipede-looking monstrosities and some kind of beetle-thing that exploded black juice when you squished it. But the real infestation was the roaches. They lived in my dishwasher. They lived in my coffee pot. They lived in my microwave. They lived in my bathroom sink. And I'm not talking one or two. I am talking swarms and swarms. Despite numerous requests for pest spraying and our own bi-weekly spray session and a threat from my roommate's mother to call the health department if they didn't fix it, they always came back. Always. I'm itching now just thinking about it. I am not a dirty person. It's been hypothesized that I have a mild, undiagnosed form of obsessive compulsion. I cleaned like a madman, and still these roaches came from God knows where. It's moderately cheap for the size of the apartments, true, but before you move here, prioritize your life. Do you want a moderately cheap apartment that could be used for the set of the sequel to Joe's Apartment? Or do you want a slightly more expensive apartment that doesn't come with an army of vermin?
