Resident 2010 - 2011

3/19/2011

Renting doesn't have to have bad connotations, sadly, The Green at Chevy chase perpetuates all the reasons renting sucks. Prepare for itemized awful things about this place: -They will offer you a "special" "low" rate, just to get you in, they PREY on the fact that it is difficult for people to move, and they WILL increase your rent over 20% the first year. You read that correctly, a 20% rent increase with NO additional services, they offer you a nicer shower head. That's right, you'll pay $2,400 more the 2nd year of your stay for a $50 shower head. Enjoy. -They lie before you even are on the property, the apartments are advertised as "luxury" which they may have been when they were built in 1988. Most of the units still have what appears to be the original furnace, air conditioner, fridge, stove, and dish washer from 1988. They will not update the apartments because they are cheap, the only apartments with newer equipment are those replaced due to failure. -Noise. Whether it's the elephant that lives above you, the water pipes which sound like niagra falls (this is literally not an exaggeration.) Or the furnace that is so loud you have to talk over it, or the Air Conditioning units, which, by the way there are a cluster of about 5 of them next to most first floor bedrooms. Try getting a good night's sleep in the summer with an air conditioner 5 feet from you. -Code. The apartments do not meet city/etc code. There are exposed light bulbs, and they only recently updated the kitchen electrical outlets to have built in circuit breakers. Which remeinds me, what luxury apartment has 1980's nasty beigh outlet and light switch faceplate, with brand new white outlets in them. It looks nasty. -Comed. You will read about this in other reviews, a problem that went on for 1 year, and was only recently fixed. One to two times a month for about a year, the power would go out in certain buildings for 6-12 hours at a time. Comed didn't fix the root cause until a year of problems. And you can rest assured the renting office didn't do anything to expedite this 3rd world embarrassing situation. Good luck getting Comed to pay you back for the $100 of groceries that they spoil every month, because they don't care. -Golf course. If you live in a unit close to the golf course, you will end up with a broken window or two (I've seen them). And depending where you park your car, it will get hit with golf balls. The lovely walking path they will tell you about is right next to the golf course, and while you're walking on it, you will see a golf ball or two fly in front of your path, hopefully not hitting you on the head. -The office staff doesn't care about you, once they show you the 'model' unit and get your papers signed and moved in, you no longer matter to them. -Bills. The gas bill will be over $60 a month in the winter due to these apartments being incredibly drafty. You cannot keep them at a comfertable temperature, because they are so drafty, they get cold, then too hot (loud over powerful furnace), then too cold, then too hot. Opposite is true in the summer. The water bill is handled by an awful outside company ISTA, and they will charge you a fortune for water (your bills will be over $45 a month, the office staff will lie about what the water bills will be). The water bill is NOT directly linked to your water usage, it's an average for the whole building. -Laundry. Most units do not have laundry machines (the units that do, start at $200 more per month), so you will have to use the shared units. They are poor quality and cost $1.50 per load, $1.50 per 45 minutes of drying time. Yes, really that expensive. You have to use an inconvenient cash card, not actual cash. This is great, because when you accidentally leave your cash card in the laundry room, it will be stolen within 24 hours. It says a lot about the people you live with when they steal a laundry card with $16 on it, these are not the type of people I wish to surround myself with. -Just say no, this place sucks, they increase the rent over 20% (when they said it would be 3-4%) once they've got you moved in, and the apartments are old and drafty. There's a reason AMLI doesn't want to be affiliated with this property anymore. Luckily I have no problem moving (I do not have a lot of stuff).
