Resident 2009 - 2010

5/14/2010

My husband and I have lived at Briar Brook for 7 months now. Here are some of the things we've liked and disliked about it: 1. The ladies who work in the office are extremely nice. When we were late on our rent (oops!) Jenna was so accommodating about it. Another time, someone had dropped a bottle of Snapple on the stairway in our building. Whoever it was just left it there and it got all sticky. I called the office and Jenna sent someone over to clean it within an hour! Jennifer is super nice as well. 2. This apartment complex was not that nice during the winter. It seemed like nobody picked up their dog's poop and the snow got really gross. The shared entry and hallways got dirty with people tracking in slush and didn't seem to get cleaned very often... I don't know that I'd blame Briar Brook for that but rather just lazy people (with the dog poo) and yucky Chicago weather. It might have been better if the dog poop bag stations were a little more accessible. 3. It has been really annoying having the dumpster so far away. There is something gross about having to put your garbage in your car to take it out. I like that they offer recycling, though. 4. Another annoyance has been that there is no mailbox here for outgoing mail. If you want to mail something you have to take it into the clubhouse during business hours or take it to the Post Office by the Jewel. We don't have Netflix and I can't imagine how annoying that would be. 5. I wouldn't say there is plenty of parking, but there is enough. I can always find a space not too far away. 6. People like to play their very loud music on the weekends sometimes. The police were called at least once and it has since gotten better. This is something you have to deal with at pretty much any apartment complex, I've found. 7. This may seem like a petty thing to point out, but I hate how the fan on the microwave goes on whenever it senses too much heat (basically anytime you have the oven and stove on at the same time). The fan is extremely loud and you can forget about having a conversation with anyone else in the apartment when it's on. Plus, once it's on, it stays on for a good 30 minutes and you cannot turn it off. 8. We've always felt pretty safe here. I've seen a few shady characters and wouldn't go outside alone at night here, but that's the case pretty much anywhere. I feel that the lighting could be a little better. 9. We live in the smallest model and love the layout. It really maximizes the square footage. The all-white kitchen is cute and has faux-granite countertops. Love the laminate floor that looks like wood. It really is a cute apartment. We can sometimes hear through the walls but not too bad. Sometimes the noise from the hallways is annoying late at night especially when people come in drunk... don't know why people stand with their doors open and have loud conversations. I hope my review is able to help someone - I know how stressful apartment-hunting can be. It feels like you're choosing the lesser of evils with any apartment complex. With Briar Brook I would say the good outweighs the bad and would definitely recommend this place to other people.
