Resident 2012

First let me say some positive aspects of this establishment. The staff is really very nice. They are always pleasant on the phone and the current manager, Sarah, listens when you have something to say. The maintenance men are friendly and efficient. I always enjoy saying hello to them when I see them on the grounds. The apartments themselves are clean and bug free. The layout is one of the best I've ever lived in. Well-lit parking lots with plenty of spaces. I always get a spot close to my front door. Now the bad... back in February when I was apartment hunting, I emphasized, quite plainly and at length, how important quiet was to me. I like to read and listen to music on my head phones and I just can't stand people who blast their music and TVs. I was assured by the then manager that this apartment was excellent on that level. And it is concerning TVs, stereos and car noise. HOWEVER, once the weather warmed just a tiny bit, the children came out. I like kids. I have little cousins and I babysit frequently. The children in this community ARE polite and delightful to talk to in person. I understand that children love to play outside in the nice weather and I would never want them deprived of that. But the problem isn't the kid's nature or personalities. It's that they are TOTALLY unsupervised for upwards of six hours in a day. I frequently see toddlers following 4, 5, 6, and 7-year-olds without an adult in sight. And unsupervised, these normally very dear, pleasant children begin to enact their own personal rendition of Lord of the Flies. They scream and scream and scream, running after each other. They run up and down the stairs and shake my second floor apartment so much that the plates in my cabinets literally rattle. I once had over a dozen children in the hallway and on the staircase all yelling to be heard over each other. Gently asking them to move to the playground usually goes unheeded or if they do move, it's for ten minutes at best before they're back again. Yelling to be heard over the din is pointless. I have a very stressful job and frankly, this experience is ruining my health. I have to have earplugs AND noise canceling headphones to not hear them. Before going to the office, I double checked my lease and it VERY CLEARLY stated that the kids are only supposed to play in the pre-designated areas, such as the playground. But with NO ONE to supervise their activities, they have the run of the entire back lot. To be fair, this problem is not complex wide. I have a friend who lives a few buildings down and she does not report having this problem. The only two children near her play very quietly outside. In my complaints to the office, I DO feel that I was heard and that my complaints were taken seriously. However, I honestly feel nothing short of sudden parental intervention can solve this problem. Management put a notice in the newsletter, personally stopped by and even had maintenance come over to talk to the children. The kids are only really active after office hours so their hands are, frankly, tied. I appreciate their effort and kindess in listening to my regular complaints. This is not the kid's fault. They're CHILDREN. Of course they want to run around and play with their friends and be out in nice weather. I don't blame them for this. But I still need my peace and quiet to stay sane in my extremely emotionally and physically draining profession. I write this rating not to lambaste Pendleton Place. In almost every other aspect they are an excellent community to live in. This is simply a statement of my experience. If quiet is as important to you as it is to me, then March through October(?), this apartment is not right for you.
