Resident 2001 - 2003

4/17/2003

I work in Cambridge, and we have a little girl and we wanted to move out of the city. We decided not to buy, and we did not want to pay the usurious finder fees.

Granada Highlands was a good choice because relative to Boston, the place is cheaper, a bit more modern, ample parking and is very spacious.

The best part for me is that it is adjacent to route 1 so that puts me into a 15 minute commute to work (but you have to pay the tolls over the Tobin :-(

Route 1 is full of strip mall shopping, restaurants and the Showcase cinemas, so life is convenient. Outide the complex there is not much to the neighborhood, however.

Now for the bad part.

Management is annoying and offensive. They charge fees for everything (if you get locked out it is $75, even though it takes a security guard 10 minutes. There are some things that should just be free, you know being neighborly. Nobody intends to get locked out.

They also try to rip you off. When the rent increase was flat over the last 2 years, they were passing on huge increases that made the rent much higher for me than someone walking in the door. It was just offensive. They also tried to double pet fees and storage spaces. Do they think we are that stupid? I was looking at an additional $400 a month. What a joke!

I got very angry with them. They backed off a bit, but i still came away offended from the whole thing. It just gives some insight into how they run the place. They treat residents like stupid cattle.

They always seem to be doing maintenance that forces us to move cars at inconvenient times.

They are trying to do the same thing this year. It is unfortunate.

Maintenance is helpful, but that is just because they are nice guys.

The grounds are good, but undermaintained. The gym is actually pretty good and they are re-doing the tennis courts, finally. The pool is ok, but it is always too cold to get in. They could splurge for a heater early in the season...

One more gripe, as for safety. They have all kinds of retaining walls on the grounds that are blind with no fencing on top of them, and there is a huge rock cliff that is dangerous. If you have small children watch them closely. A spill over one of the walls onto pavement would likely be fatal. I always see kids playing near the rock cliff, and it is a matter of time before one gets seriously hurt.

Overall, I would recommend this place, but be prepared to fight with management over money.
