Resident 2010 - 2012

2/4/2012

We moved to our two br & den & narrow balcony Longview apartment after selling a large home in Brookline. It has proven to be just the right size to allow us each personal office space as well as room to accommodate a guest. The closet space is quite ample although we also leased a small storage area to handle occasionally used and seasonal items such as luggage and items left over from downsizing. All the appliances were like new, spotlessly clean. The kitchen stove (I'd prefer gas)is efficient, although no directions are provided for self-cleaning and the lacquer finish on the drip pans under the burners is easily scratched. The cabinets are deceptively beautiful, not wood but a wood-like resin covering, easy to clean but not top drawer. The refrigerator is similar to one we owned although a slightly scaled down apartment size but perfectly adequate. We love the ice maker in the freezer. The smoke detectors are easily activated...we quickly learned to turn on all the vents and fans and open the balcony door when frying. One downside of the open plan is that cooking smells permeate the area. A slider door/balcony really helps with airing out the smells of cooking. The full size washer and dryer is an added convenience. The laundry area is also large enough to hold shelves for additional pantry items. The living room space has been completely adequate for us. We face the Waltham Hills, overlooking Children's Hospital and the parking garage which may be the less desirable orientation but we view incredible sunsets many evenings and enjoy the Brandeis castle in profile and campus lights. The narrow balcony is not adequate for lounging but perfect for growing flowers and some container vegetables. Other residents have spoken about students and although I've observed many younger residents often in groups, I am uncertain if they are graduate or undergraduate students. We personally haven't been negatively impacted by their presence either inside or outside of the complex. The apartments are relatively soundproof although you do hear some noise from the hallways. Only once did noise from a college-age party disturb us. Over all it is really very quiet everywhere. Smells from a variety of ethnic cooking is often evident in the corridors but has never seeped into our apartment. We had a brief problem with a barking dog but after speaking with the neighbor, the problem went away. We often hear a crying baby in a neighboring apartment, but it is not annoying, nor is the beep from the elevator or crunch from the trash shoot both of which are adjacent to us. There are a number of dogs but the owners are respectful when escorting them in the hallways...I don't know about the doggie-do clean-up problem. Our maintenance requests, although small, have been satisfied both quickly and efficiently, always within 24 hours. The overall maintenance of the public areas of the building is outstanding. We've felt the package acceptance system has been lacking but a new system may improve that situation. It's not unusual to receive mail for former residents for a long, long, long time. This has been some turnover with the concierges throughout the year but most are eager to be helpful. I am not a fan of wall to wall carpeting and you can expect stains will happen. Guest parking is very inconvenient. Be careful not to park in the circle overnight or you will be towed.
