Resident 2013 - 2015

7/29/2015

QUICK SUMMARY because there is a wall of text underneath: -Biggest issues are with maintenance and build of apartment -Window in shower. -I'd only live here as a first apartment or somewhere to stay until you're on your feet My girlfriend and I have been a resident here since spring of 2013, and we live in the complex off of McClean Blvd, and not Dartmouth rd. Maybe it's better there, but this place could use some improvements. We needed somewhere to go quick, and this place was cheap. As some other reviews stated, what you pay for is what you get. It's some of the cheapest rent we've seen. It's not an awful experience, but it's certainly not the best. We haven't personally seen any roaches, but they have a big ant and mouse issue. Ants all over the place unless you keep very, very clean in the summer, and in the winter, you have to keep calling and calling for them to get rid of the mouse. And that brings me to my second issue: maintenance. They just don't show up. The only time we ever get anyone is when they have to replace the batteries on the smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. Otherwise? They won't show up the first or the second time, or even the third. We had to continuously call in the middle of an ice storm in February just for our heat to come back on. It took five days. If you want a speedy, or even semi-competent maintenance staff, I'd pass this place over. The office staff however, were always very nice to us. Whenever we call, they sound surprised it hasn't been fixed yet. Whenever we had questions, they always answered. Their lunch hours are a little weird, but that's my only complaint with them. Unfortunately, the noise is an issue here as well. There have been many loud families, letting their children run up and down the steps non-stop. While we've never had an issue with someone trying to break into our apartment, someone across from us did. One time, someone ran inside, up the stairs, and slept in the hallway. We have people come into our building, smoke weed (which fine, whatever, smoke, just do it where you live, and not hide in some apartment complex). And more than once I've opened my door to leave, only to have people gambling right outside of it. Sometimes they're on the stoop out front, but sometimes they're literally in front of my apartment. I am on the ground floor, so I know safety isn't as good as the second, but regardless, I am not comfortable with people who do not live in this specific building smoking and gambling right in front of my door at 1 in the morning. It would be nice if we had to unlock the first door to get into the building. I would give it a higher safety rating if that were the case. The grounds, too, could be better. Grounds keeping is great, and they work hard. It's always nice for a few days after they come... but that's it. So much garbage ends up in the parking lots and on the grounds itself. It's gotten better over the years, but not by much. I guess I can't really fault the complex, but it is frustrating when you go out to your car and there's a bag of royal farm's chicken on the ground right next to it. Now, onto the apartment itself. It is small. The kitchen has no room for a table, but you do have a breakfast nook. It is a small place, and I can't imagine trying to fit more than a loveseat and a bookshelf or two in the living room. The kitchen is hard to cook in, because the only real cooking space is in that corner near the stove and sink, but it's awkward. It's not bad, but it's not ideal. The closets are also small, so don't expect a lot of space. My two biggest issues with the apartment are though, the lack of insulation, and the window in the shower. We're on an end unit, so maybe it's just us, but in winter, our walls are freezing. It's like there's no insulation whatsoever, or if there is, they didn't install it properly. In previous places we've lived, the walls were never this cold in winter, and we've lived in corner apartments before. It makes the entire apartment cold. The window in the shower, however, is the absolute worst. They don't have proper ventilation in the entire apartment. The vent above the stove leads into the bedroom. In the bathroom? Their system is a window. In the shower. In. The shower. There are blinds, but do you know how gross it is? When we moved in they told us we have to try not to get water on the sill, so the paint doesn't come off. And that we had to keep it as dry as possible. Then don't put the window literally in the shower! That is downright impossible to keep it bone dry. Mold grows there, so you have to clean it. It is just... I have never lived somewhere with a window with blinds in the shower. It's ridiculous. And it is a little sad that it's no pets allowed, but at least they're up front about it. That's just a personal thing and not really a fault of the complex. All in all, it's not a horrible experience, but it's not the best. It's a really good place if you just need somewhere cheap to live until you can get back on your feet. The lower rent compared to other places in the area makes it easier to save money for a better place, and if you don't have a lot of stuff, or a lot of people, the size is okay enough. Small, but it's not the worst. We fit a queen size bed along with a small desk and a dresser in our bedroom, so it's okay. I wouldn't live here more than a year or two though; it's just not worth it.
