Resident 2006 - 2007

6/18/2007

My girlfriend and I moved here from out of state in December, we are in our early 20's, both college grads, and are not black, which is 99% of the population here. We rushed to find an apartment and chose Crosswinds because it was close to work (one mile commute) and it had a nice model apartment which we were told was "exactly like the units", which is not true, so be sure to look at an empty unit to see what they actually look like before signing anything. We are in a fully renovated 2 bedroom townhouse...and that was a good choice on our part, with old appliances and floors this place would be nearly unliveable. Rent is $1030/mo. including pet rent ($25). Positives: Parking is plentiful where I live, neighbors are friendly and always say hello, our bills have been reasonable...about $20/mo for water and $50-$100/mo for electric depending on the temperature outside (more $$ in winter, obviously), noise levels are fine at night and most of the day, no maintenance calls since move-in day. Negatives: The Townhouse: Move-in day was a disappiontment: the unit had so many problems that we filled the move-in problem checklist and needed to attach an extra sheet of paper!! The apartment had not been looked at, and only the floors, sinks, bathrooms, counters had been cleaned. The lights were full of flies, the screens on the windows and sliding backdoor were ripped (large rips that could not be missed), only one out of about five closets actually had doors that worked (most were off the tracks completely, and again, unmissable), some windows were cracked, and the bedroom doors did not close (actually they still do not close, but we have learned to live with that inconvenience). The major problems (closet doors, screens, cracked windows) were addressed by the maintenance staff within a week, but the rest we have just dealt with and we haven't bothered requesting further maintenance. There are lots of ants, which I seem to have controlled with ant traps, and we currently have a mouse that is our maid and cleans our counters if we miss a crumb or two...but it lets us know it was there by leaving some little brown presents behind...disgusting. The Community: Dogs and small children running around without any owner in sight, sometimes in the middle of the road!? The units on either side of us have at least 8 people living in each. There are all ages of children, with the older ones usually babysitting the younger. It is sometimes a little noisy when they are all playing outside. I believe there is a law in place that says a maximum of 2 renters per bedroom, but that law is not followed here... Also, 2-3 ice cream trucks come around like 10 times per day starting late morning and going until about 10PM!? What is that about?? There is a white one that comes around during the day, and a red one sometimes comes out at night...I've never bought anything and sometimes I wonder what they are selling at 10PM...hmmm??special adult treats?? There are lots of teenagers walking around, sometimes in large groups in the road. We do not feel safe walking around at night. There are often police here, and they have just setup a "community watch" where volunteers from the community patrol to add safety...so far one lady has volunteered...I feel safer already...lol. We are not happy here and will be breaking our lease very soon, and we will be paying 2 months extra rent (about $2000) to break it. I might post again about that whole process. We will not make the mistake of rushing into a lease ever again!
