Resident 2014 - 2015

2/1/2015

I'm in a 3 bedroom townhouse. Washer/dryer in unit. Pets are allowed for an extra deposit and additional fee per month. Overall, there's a lot to find fault with in this place, but for my first place on my own with roommates and the price, it was pretty good. The most obnoxious thing was the noise, that got really frustrating at times, but as long as your neighbors don't have like 8 different kids in/out at all hours of the day, you're fine. My star ratings aren't that great, and I'd consider re-leasing if I wasn't moving out of state, but I'd also probably look around to see what's out there. I wavered back on forth on whether or not I'd recommend it, but overall, if you're looking for a cheap, decently nice, large place to live that's got a decent location, I'd say go for it. Pros: The price is great. I've found places with similar costs but they have no where near the amount of room. It was clean on moving in, and has been pretty easy to keep clean while living there. I'm not a huge fan of seeing people walking in my backyard all the time to get to Giant Eagle, but I like living within walking distance to the stores, and even downtown. It's over a mile walk, but doable, and if not, cabs are cheap. It's mostly families, but we're a few young-20's sharing a place. Plenty of parking, we have 3 roommates and friends, and we always have a spot in front of our house. There's lots of space. I'm in the "master" bedroom, no private bath, but two closets, which for a girl in her mid-20's is great. There's plenty of storage in the laundry room and 2 mutual closets. Cons: The walls are paper thin. Make sure your neighbors don't have babies or too many kids. Our neighbors have so many kids, and I always hear one crying, someone yelling, stuff falling, it's so noisy. I can make out full conversations people are having from next door. Same thing goes between the rooms in the house. When I'm watching TV and my roommate is on the phone in her room, I can hear every single word. The air vents to right through, and if you close them to muffle the sound, then you don't get the heat/AC to flow through. The floors are pretty loud too, when someone's walking around in their room the floors squeak. We've had silverfish on and off, and I think there's some black mold growing in our bathroom ceiling. There's not much counter space to cook on, but the kitchen overall is a decent size. The maintenance. I've read mixed reviews on here about maintenance, and I must say I'm not overly impressed. Some pros of maintenance. Within a month of moving in our dryer broke, and they replaced it. It too 1-2 weeks to come in, but they did replace it at no extra cost. The AC was broken, they fixed that within a day. On to the cons. Then our front screen door handle broke. They took one off a vacant house and "fixed" it, but the handle didn't actually work so in order to not get locked out, we had to tape a part of it so it opened on its own. The dishwasher leaked and we told them to fix it, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Took 2 calls to get them to come fix it, and they finally found the problem after feeling the wet carpet. Also the light switch in my room never worked, and when I told them, they came and went "huh, you're right, it doesn't work" and that was it. It was never fixed. We were always nice to them, offered them water, chatted, etc. when they were over since the AC took a few hours to figure out, and they were always friendly and nice to us back. I never felt uncomfortable with them in my house. Gave them 3 starts because they are nice, but they could of put more effort into things at times. Safety. I do feel pretty safe here. I don't go check the mail or walk by myself to the store at night, but I'd never do that anywhere. There's always people walking around the parking lot or to/from the stores, so you'd have to be comfortable with people around/walking by at any time of day. There's also a lot of shopping carts in the parking lot for that reason. Overall neighborhood isn't bad. I haven't heard the best things about the Applegate Apartments or town homes on the other side of Potomac Commons, but these seem to be mostly families. There's a couple of parks nearby, I never used the pool. There's not much room for recycling, so go when it when it's empty. I gave the grounds 2 starts because the shopping carts and often times there's been trash blowing around our front yard from the dumpsters.
