Over-the-tracks living - but CHEAP!
I have lived here for nearly a year out of necessity. Rent is the cheapest you'll find in the Michiana area, with accomodating lease lengths - but other than that, a pain. Downtown is a mile walk from the apartments, which sucks if you can't take the locally-run intercity bus or don't have a car. Everything is downtown - grocery, library, government buildings and the like. So it's pretty out of the way. The place does have on-site laundry and a pool, and I've never had a problem with parking close to my building but other that, I'd say stay away. Apartments are crummy and have various constructional flaws, my heating bill (even for my little studio!) is through the roof because the windows aren't remotely insulated, and I'm surrounded on all sides by creepy old bachelors who don't work and will vacuum at 11 p.m., 7 a.m. and generally make weird noises I can't explain and that interrupt my sleep. Also heard gunfire a few times over the summer, and it was NOT to celebrate the 4th of July! Still, it's very cheap, so if that's all that really matters, then check it out. UPDATE: I've had my car broken into twice now. The first time, they took my stereo CD face this past summer and I haven't been able listen to music in my car since, because a new face costs almost as much as the player. And just LAST NIGHT someone got into my car and riffled through it, looking for stereo equipment again. I'm SOOO pissed. I started leaving my car unlocked so people will quit smashing the windows, and I can't keep anything in the car anymore - last night proves I'm correct in doing so. Rent just went up $30, too.Share This Review
