Resident ā€¢ 2013

I've been at The Retreat for two months now. I like my 1 bedroom apartment -- there's lots of space and lighting -- but because of the inconvenient mail system, broken online payment system and poor management, I don't think I'll be renewing my lease next year. Below I've written out the pros and cons of my apartment and The Retreat in general. I hope it will give a clear picture of what it's like to live here. While I'm not completely satisfied, I think there are some strong pros, so please don't take this as an overall warning against staying here. For some people, this could be a great place to stay. Pros of the apartment: * Lots of lighting. * My only shared wall is the floor -- I love it! * I'm on the third floor, so I have a small vaulted ceiling with a fan. * New carpet. * Plenty of storage space (for me at least). * Good counter space in the kitchen. * Appliances all work well. * The walk-in closet has great shelves for storage. Cons of the apartment: * I'm not in an "upgraded" apartment so some of my kitchen drawers don't even open they're so bad. * The apartment had a subtle smell of smoke when I first moved it. It's much better now with a filter and air fresheners. * The blinds in the bedroom are very flimsy and let in a lot of light in the morning. I'm going to have to put up curtains. * The stair wells are very narrow, and since I'm on the third floor (the apartment is half floors so it's really higher) with no elevator, it can be frustrating to move stuff in (even groceries if I have to make more than one trip). * This could be a con and could be a pro for some. Washer/dryer units aren't included, so I've had to rent my own. I suppose it's a plus in a way because The Retreat maintenance would probably take forever to repair it if it broke anyway. Cons of The Retreat in general: * Picking up packages here is TERRIBLE. You have to go to the leasing office, which isn't open past 6 p.m. during the week and closes early on the weekends. If I get a package during the week, I have to wait until the weekend to pick it up. They also just changed it so I have to go to the local post office to pick up any packages that come through the USPS. For me, that's a huge inconvenience. The Retreat needs a better way of dealing with mail -- like a mail room. It really wouldn't be that hard. * I've had to pay rent by check these past two months. Since they've been bought, I guess they'll change payment options. Hopefully, that means I can pay online instead of having to physically go in on Monday morning to pay rent. * I've only had one dealing with the maintenance team. Management failed to notify them the first two times I called in. The lady finally got it right the third time and then maintenance took two days to respond. They are SLOW. I just hope I won't have to call them very often. If I do, I'll be sure to follow up the next day to be sure management actually placed the request.
