Resident ā€¢ 2011 - 2012

7/25/2012

I moved into Duke Manor knowing I was moving into one of the cheapest places in Durham, but my standards were low and I thought I could manage for a year. IT IS NOT WORTH IT! We ended up spending for more money with all the problems created by living here then we did save because of the cheap rent. CONS: Bedbugs: we were forced to throw away all of our furniture when we moved out because we were infested. Even after the utmost precaution, having the apartment exterminator come, we never got rid of them. It was sickening knowing you had to go to bed and wake up with bites all over your body. Cockroaches: Despite them spraying and all over out prevention, we had problems with these the entire year. Noise: We were very tolerant of noise, but it was just so excesive. Music, yelling all hours of the day and night. We could hear normal conversation levels from our neighbors because of paper thin walls. Saftey: We were never broken into, but did receive several notices while living there to be on alert because of break ins and robberies within the complex. More concerning, there is absolutely not screening process for residents, and as a result we were physically threatened (at random before even meeting) one of our neighbors who turned out to be very disturbed, and very scary to live next too. I didn't feel comfortable being in my apartment alone because of my neighbor. Summary: Yes, it is cheap. And they do a good job making the outside look nice. But the expenses and stress of living in such an environment completely out ways any money you save.
