Resident ā€¢ 2011 - 2012

7/16/2012

I have rented a 1BR apartment at Atria since July 2011. This has been the worst experience with renting in my life. When we originally saw the apartments they looked nice and clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Then the day we went to sign the lease they told us about all the extra fees they charge. This info was withheld from us until it was too late and we had no choice but so sign since we had already packed up all our stuff and driven 500 miles. They hide these fees in their water bill (which they use a company called First Billing, who is run by the same people who run The Connor Group, who owns Atria). You will be forced to pay over $150 a month for trash, pest control, sanitation fee, administration fee, storm water, and you will also be charged for cable and internet whether you want it or not, they tell you you are getting a deal, but it's actually more than the cable company charges themselves. If you don't pay this bill, they will refuse to accept your rent money until it has been paid, and then tack on a late fee to your rent for being 'late'. Once you sign the lease the staff completely ignores you. They never answer the phone or answer your emails. Asking to have something fixed is a joke. When our mirror in the bathroom fell off the wall and shattered it took them 2 MONTHS to bring a replacement. We reminded them repeatedly that we were waiting to have it fixed and they always had some excuse as to why it hadn't been done, including 'Oh I forgot to put in a work order for that!'. The staff changes every month so you will never talk to the same person. It's almost always some new person who has no idea what they are doing. I witnessed one tenant having the police called to remove him simply for asking to speak with a manager about his rent payment. Customer service is non-existant here. Over the past year since The Connor Group bought out this complex, it has gone completely down hill. People are moving out at a startling rate because of all these issues. They have become so desperate that they have hired someone to stand on the street corner waving to cars to try to get new tenants. They have started letting some less than desirable people rent here, and now what used to be a quiet and friendly complex has become ------, loud, dirty and unsafe. They claim to have a breed restriction on dogs, but half the dogs living here are pit bulls. Dogs are allowed to run free and nobody cleans up after them. Instead of picking up the trash, the maintenance people just use leaf blowers and blow it all into the woods. The lovely woods that line the apartments are now covered in trash and waste. There is one trash compactor for the entire complex and it is always overflowing and smells horrible. They used to have a really nice car washing area with 2 hoses and 2 vacuums, but now none of them work. They painted the buildings around Christmas time and instead of leaving notices on people's doors so they could move their things, they just painted anyway and got paint all over people's doormats and door wreaths. They even got up onto my balcony and moved all my things around without permission. The bottom line is that the staff is rude and uncaring. The complex is becoming more and more dirty, loud, and unsafe. You will be lured in by their 'specials' but end up paying way more than you would be at most comparable apartments in the area. The Connor Group is an investment firm so their main goal is to suck as much money out of you as possible. They are so bad there is a group on Facebook for tenants against The Connor Group with of over 325 members with so many horror stories you would not believe. I am not just one irate tenant who had a bad experience, this is true at all of their complexes and I urge you to STAY AWAY from any complex owned by The Connor Group. The fact that Atria has the lowest rating in the area should be a huge hint to look elsewhere. Don't be scammed like I was, the entire experience at Atria is a nightmare and I wish someone had warned me before I signed the lease.
