Resident 2000 - 2002

8/6/2002

We would strongly not recommend anyone to even remotely consider renting at Beachwood Park. The Beachwood Park management not only kept our deposit when we moved out, but then sent us a bill for charges to replace carpet in the entire apartment! The manager, Ms. Keyes, claimed it was because our pets had damaged the carpet so badly it was beyond repair. What a lousy way to try and make back the money they lost for their "low rent" promotions! Below is a portion of our response letter, which was sent to the Beachwood Park management, their home office in Virginia, and the Better Business Bureau of Raleigh:

We wish to complain concerning the recent manner in which our lease termination from the Beachwood Park Townhomes community in Raleigh, N.C. was handled. We find it absolutely deplorable that your on-site manager, Cara Keyes, found it necessary to replace the carpet and pad for an entire apartment without appropriate notice. Her decision regarding pet stains and/or odors is the first and only one we’ve received from any previous residence within the past five years.

We’d also like to bring several other issues to your attention regarding your on-site management, maintenance crew and community condition in general. The Beachwood Park Townhomes community is poorly constructed and poorly maintained. Grassy areas and landscaping were only maintained around the office and pool areas, especially as the summer months (and drought) progressed. Yet, the community was consistently urged to “respect the landscaping efforts” by walking pets in remote areas. Whenever it rained, water poured down the wall from a light switch that was located near the patio door, and more often than not, our building (and only our building) would be left without electricity. It often took several hours for power to be restored to our building, while the rest of the complex had electricity. Apartment walls and ceilings are very poorly insulated, resulting in constant, unwanted noise from upstairs and next-door neighbors, as well as from the outside.

The maintenance crew was extremely unreliable; it took repeated requests and several days for any maintenance issue to be addressed. We never had a patio door that locked in the 18 months we lived there, even after repeated requests. We finally gave up and braced the door ourselves. We experienced several incidents of leaking toilets, which again, took several days to be repaired.

Your on-site management staff is the worst with which we’ve ever had to deal. The only favorable response we ever received from any staff member was when rent was due or it was time to renew our lease. There was a definite inconsistency in enforcement of community policies. On-site management turned deaf ears to excessive noise complaints, and blind eyes to reports of people working on vehicles in the parking lot. However, Ms. Keyes was quick to send us a nasty notice requesting the immediate removal of a recliner, which had been placed on our patio in preparation for disposal. We were appalled to have been reprimanded so strongly for such a minor event, especially when more urgent issues were never properly addressed.

We strongly recommend serious review of your on-site management, maintenance crew and policy enforcement. We are also notifying the Better Business Bureau of Raleigh with our complaints, as well as taking advantage of every opportunity we can to urge potential renters to stay away from your facility. We wish the enclosed reviews from Apartment Ratings.com had been available when we considered our move to Raleigh.

If you are looking at Beachwood Park, we strongly urge you to reconsider. We had an extremely negative experience with them, and could not wait to move into our own home.
