Resident 2000 - 2001

7/22/2003

Moving in

My wife and I were looking for an apartment to move into when Antiqua was under construction. Yes, it was out there, but nothing in Wilmingotn is that far away, and there was a crappy Food Lion across the street. We both thought we were lucky, we were able to have our pick of apartments, something you usually have very little control over. The office manager told us which apartments would be complete by our move-in date. We notified our other apartment and put down our deposits. When we put down our deposit we again asked if our apartment would be ready by the date, and we were told it would be. A week before we moved in we came back and the apartment had hardly been worked on. The office manager said she never told us it would be ready by that date, which was a lie. The deposit (regular and pet) and application fee were non refundable so we were forced to select a less desireable apartment.

The Apartment.

Two bedroom, two bath, corner apartment. Small, small, small. It just seemed larger when we saw them under construction. Let´s start with the kitchen. Can you say Two main cabnets and two drawers? Even less space if you have a washer/dryer because its in the kitchen. We didn´t have a washer dryer so we put shelves in the area for a pantry. The dining area is only large enough for a bisto set and your couch will be three feet from the TV. If you have a coffee table you might want to put it in storage. The closets in the bedrooms had sliding doors and they were constantly coming off their tracks. The bathrooms do not have any cabinets or drawers. The walls of the apartments are paper thin. We could hear our neighbors was their clothes every time. And let´s face it, Wilmington is a college town so you will probably have to deal with that also. The windows for the apartment are not insulated. During the winter caused the most problems. The heat from the apartment and the cold damp air from outside the window caused condesation to form on all our windows and panes. This in turn caused black mold to form around it.

Facilities/Grounds

When we first viewed the apartment the only way to get to it was from a gravel road off the main road. We asked if that was going to be paved. The office manager said they were in negotiations with the city, and if the city did not pave it the apartment would. It was never paved when we were there and might not be now. The gravel road was the most dirct path but it was rough and dirty. We never used to pool since it was mainly winter when we were there and the grounds were basic. The laudry room cost a bloody fortune to do a load because picking a working dryer was like playing russian roulette. Only needed maintanance once and they were prompt. Parking was never a problem since the complex was not at full capacity.

Moving out.

We moved out-of-state after our 6 month lease. A month later we got part of our deposit back. We were charged for not having some working lightbulbs (The apartment did not have ANY lightbulbs when we moved in), not having a sink nozel (once again the apartment did not have one and we were not about to leave our nice spray/swivel one we bought), and have a spot on the carpet (which to this day we dispute).

Final Thought

Don´t move here, move elsewhere, to a place where you will be valued.
