Resident 2001

7/10/2001

This is a place to avoid. The people who live there seem nice, it´s quiet, not a bad spot -- but the management and support staff are an absolute disaster.

I moved into Avalon Watch on May 14. The person who rented me the apartment, named Todd, was a pretty good guy, polite, handled the transaction professionally. From there on, this has been a comedy of errors.

I rented the apartment as a convenient temporary location while I work on an assignment here in Princeton. I didn´t expect much, just a convenient, quiet place to live.

The management staff is either completely overwhelmed with the workload for the property or incompetent. The only thing they do well is to sincerely apologize for their screwups -- I suspect this is something they´ve gotten pretty good at --with lots of practice.

When I moved in, I discovered that the washer and drier were very old, had not been used, and the drier wouldn´t turn on. They´d never been tested before I moved in, apparently. After calls to practically everyone over the course of about 4 weeks, they were replaced finally, but only after calling late on a Friday afternoon and practically forcing the maintenance man to install them. On at least 3 prior occasions, various staff members committed to a time and date of installation but never showed up and never called. Along the way, everyone was very apologetic -- they even offered to remit some of my rent. They never actually did this, of course, but I´m sure they would apologize, sincerely, if I reminded them.

I have now been without hot water for a full week I´ve called them 3 or 4 times, provided the same information for them to put into their system on several occasions. Last night I got a call from Paul at the maintenance shop wondering if it had been fixed yet.... NOT. Today I called and the person who puts the data into the system wanted to know if it had been fixed yet... NOT. I just left message with the "community" manager -- Tricie -- asking for the key to the mystery of how to get this fixed. I´m sure she´ll call soon to apologize, and she will be very good at it.

You can´t win in this process. You complain, they apologize, they promise to take care of the problem, then nothing happens.... start over at the beginning. Eventually, the thing will probably get taken care, but who has the time or patience?

If I knew who to call at the top level of the organization, I would make the call just to have a little fun with him or her. Nothing would happen, but the apologies would probably be so well done, I´d sign up for another year.

Do NOT go near this place...

Craig
