Resident 2013 - 2014

10/30/2014

I currently live in Clarendon Heights Apartments, and have lived in a galley-style third-floor one-bedroom apartment for almost a year and a half. I cannot say enough good things about this complex and the people who run it. Melissa and Courtney, who work in the office, were wonderful to work with, and have always been helpful and upbeat. Craig, who is in charge of maintenance, always has been very helpful (though I have had little need of his help as all the appliances within the apartment work great!). Once, when I was trying to dig my car out after a major snowstorm, he noticed I was struggling, and he and the maintenance crew dug out my car. It's those little things that make a big difference! SPACE: As far as the apartment itself, I do not have one "newer" updated apartments, and I chose one of the smallest apartments (galley), as I live alone. (I have friends who have a galley-style first floor apartment, and they find that they have the perfect amount of space--so this style is great for couples, as well.) I preferred this set up to the other one bedrooms, as I felt the space was more "broken-up" and cozy. There is a dining room/living room combination, a bed room, hallway and bathroom. The living room, dining area, and bedroom are spacious, and have a lot of light--something that is very important to me. Much of this light come from the sliding glass doors which lead to my balcony. I love this feature of the apartment. Being able to sit "outside" on the balcony or even open these doors also makes the apartment feel more open. Although the kitchen space is small, because it is open on both ends (only two parallel walls), it does not feel claustrophobic. I love that it has garbage disposal and a dishwasher. My dishwasher is a little older, so I do try to rinse of the dishes before I put them in. My friends with the same style apartment have a newer dishwasher. The bathroom also is small but meets my needs. My only complaint is that the bathroom door must be shut when showering because the steam sets off the fire alarm (which is right outside the door). In terms of closet space, though I wish there were a little more, I think that there is sufficient amount. I have one closet with shelving in the hallway just outside the kitchen. I keep my canned food and cleaning supplies here. In the bedroom, I have 2 decent sized closets. Each closet has one shelf and a rod for hanging clothing. There is a coin-operated washer and dryer in the basement of each building. Both work really well. In the time I've spent here, I have only ever seen 2 residents in washing machine room--so there were extremely limited conflicts with sharing the washer and dryer. NOISE: In my apartment and my friends' first floor, I rarely hear any noise from neighbors. When I do hear noise, I can hear people talking, but it's too muffled for me to make out what they are saying. I know someone else who lived in the complex who complained about his upstairs neighbors doing aerobics that ways very noisy. However, this kind of thing has nothing to do with the complex itself, but the floor you are on (why I always choose to live on a top floor). GROUNDS: The grounds are well-kept and beautiful. You can tell that Craig and the rest of the maintenance staff take pride in what they do. My apartment building is adjacent to one of the larger lawns in the complex, and I have even seen a duck family and deer in the yard on more than one occasion. In the winter, the maintenance staff is very good about keeping the parking lot plowed and the sidewalks shoveled and salted. AMENITIES: In the summer, I love going swimming in the pool. The pool is usually quiet, and I'm able to take my book out and read. During the summer, the gym hours are extended to the same length as the pool. I have never used the gym, so I cannot speak to that. In part, I do not use it because I am usually working when it is open. I cannot recommend Clarendon Heights enough. The people who work here are fair, responsive, and take pride in their work and the complex. The space I have is wonderful, and everyone who comes to visit complements me on how great it looks.
