Resident 2012

11/19/2012

I moved in May of 2012. New life owned the property at that time and I did not really have any issues with them. Work orders were completed in a timely fashion, other than that I did not really have any interactions with management. I paid my rent on time some I never heard from them. Then Mckinely properties took over. Their first week in the office they put an eviction notice on every door. For every person I talked to, the story was that there was some amount of money they claimed was unpaid. In our case, they said we owed an additional $80 because we had not paid the full amount the month before. This was because they stopped sending monthly bills and asked that we pay what we paid the previous month; I had a credit on my bill the previous month. I understand that the money was properly owed to them, however they gave us 3 days to pay it or the eviction process would begin. The next month, our furnace was leaking and our basement carpet was soaked. We used every towel we have to soak up the water. I put in the work order as soon as we noticed it and still heard nothing for 2 weeks. Finally I went in to the office to ask them why no one had been out yet and to tell them that the apartment was beginning to smell. They got someone out 2 days later and I came to an illegible note from maintence that they never did figure out what it was about. I also put in a work order about my front door not latching properly, not only compromising the security of our home but also allowing heat/air to escape causing higher utilities. There was also weather stripping torn off where someone had attempted to break in while the power was knocked out for a week. After 5 weeks, someone came out to tighten a screw in the door making it slighly possible to latch, but still leaving a large, open gap at the top of the door. To "replace the weather stripping" he ripped 2 pieces off of spare strip he had and taped it where it had been torn. Classy. The final straw now is that they are now separately billing water. Previously, we were paying around $36 a month for 3 occupants. Our first separate water bill, with 2 occupants, is $114. When we asked management about it, they said the previous owners were behind on payment so they're catching up. I'd like to know how that is the residents responsibility. It's not like I wasn't paying it before! My second bill just came in today, $155!! I don't even have a washer! I spoke with the billing company, because the management office NEVER answers the phone or returns callg. They informed me that because of a drop in occupants throughout the complex, the remaining residents may be asked to pay a larger amount to cover the cost of unoccupied units. Again, how is this our responsibility? I am desperately trying to find a way out of here without penalty. I don't feel safe here and I definitely can't afford to pay these outrageous water bills!
