Resident ā€¢ 2009 - 2011

11/18/2011

I'm the person who wrote the review dated 9/22/2009. I wanted to give a further account of my experience here and was unable to edit my previous review. My username was hacked into, and apartmentratings.com was uncooperative with resetting my password, hence the new review under another name. I have lived in one of the townhomes for two years now and am very happy with the management and the facilities themselves. For the price and area, these apartments can't be beat. They are very large and have a finished basement. I have relatively new appliances. The problems I've had with the facilities include minor basement leak. However, this was fixed very quicky. Maintenance is always on top of calls. In addition, the apartments are poorly insulated; this winter, I actually had ice form on the window handles. However, this is pretty typical for apartment living. I also smell my neighbors smoke (see below). Not very enjoyable! However, primarily, the unfortunate aspect of living here is the idiot neighbors. They are completely disrespectful of others that live here. They don't watch their kids. I'm often climbing over the next door neighbors kid (yes, you apartment -----------) and his friends and toys as I come out my front doors. The kids don't move. The parents don't watch the kid. The next door neighbor also decided to get a dog but doesn't want to take responsibility for it. They throw the bags of dog crap down on our common porch and leave it sit there despite the fact that there is a dumpster on the other side of their apartment, where they likely walk the dog anyway. Their thing seems to be trying to gain acceptance from all of the neighbors, and they are often bouncing around like social butterflies instead of throwing their dog sh@t away. In the meantime, I get to enjoy seeing bags of dog sh@t pile up plus the accompanying flies and smell. I complained to the office. It was nipped in the bud for awhile, but recently they started saving their dog crap again. To top it all off, they are now hiding it under their doormat, like I'm not going to know. The bags sat their recently for over a month. I called management again, and maintenance came over to throw it away and sent them a bill for the clean-up. The following day, they placed more bags under their doormat. The --------------------------, but yet she can't watch her kid and doesn't have time to throw her dog crap away. The neighbors also take the dog to pee on the grass right in front of our doors instead of taking it around the side where there is a lot more grass and it is much further away from the buildings. All the grass in front of our building is fried and dead. In one instance after it snowed, they had the dog pee on the sidewalk right in front of the entryway to our apartments. I had another neighbor that decided to take up the drums one day, who I affectionately refer to as "little drummer boy". He played for nearly 90 minutes. To my amazement, he seemed to think that was acceptable in an apartment complex. It was so loud that the first floor vibrated and, when I called the office, they could hear it through the phone. Like with the dog sh@t people, he was told to stop but did it again a few weeks later. He moved out and was replaced by a family of chain smokers. The smoke pours into my utility room and gets sucked up by the furnace to be distributed through my apartment. It also comes through the baseboards on the common walls we share. Maintenance installed a charcoal filter (which I had to pay for), which helps only a little bit. They also tried sealing around the rafters in the utility room to no great avail. So, I had to spend $170 on an air purifier to put in the utility room, hoping that it would capture the smoke before it got sucked into the furnace. That helped some but not completely as it can't soak up the smokey air quickly enough. The neighbor does have the right to smoke in his own apartment. Still, the construction shouldn't be so bad that I smell it like I'm in the same room. However, maintenance and management did go above and beyond and try to do the best they could to seal it out. You have to give them credit for that. Most complexes would have blown me off. I often see the neighbors congregating, bitching and whining, about the most petty stuff. I don't see what the problem is. If it's really that bad, go somewhere else and pay an extra $200 to $300 a month, but I bet that they would complain about it somewhere else too. My deck got painted, so one of the neighbors, who normally didn't give me the time of day (also friends with the dog sh@t people), stopped me when I had groceries in my hand (including a sheet of cake) to inquire why my deck got painted and hers didn't. Then, she started tripping out about how her kid was going to get mold beneath his fingernails from touching the deck railing. It was strange! I really didn't give a sh@t if her kid got mold (who was normally one of the ones who left his toys out on the sidewalk that I had to step over). Fortunately, they moved. With the negative comments, it doesn't sound like I would recommend the apartment. I do; I love the apartment itself, not the neighbors. Unfortunately, the neighbors are just more stup!d and trashy than usual. Just be aware that the apartments are older, but that's also why you aren't paying $1200 or more. Nothing luxurious, but it's OK. The exercise room could use some TLC, but I've found that in most other complexes in Columbus I looked at too. All things considered, aside from the neighbors, it's pretty good. If you don't care for kids and can handle living in a smaller space, I recommend that you live in one of the apartments instead of the townhouses. Be aware there is no playground for the kids, so they are often running around in front of the townhouses with their toys scattered about and screaming under your windows. If your a transplant from a larger city, you may be disappointed with Columbus. The Lomborough University says this is a world class city, but apparently they've never visited here. They came to this conclusion based on some sort of calculation that didn't necessarily measure quality of life. I've fould Columbus to be rather overrated and somewhat backward. They are overly fascinated with college football to the point where it's cult-like. If you are looking for a more urban experience in a town that isn't in the process of dying, try Cincinnati. I recommend throughly visting any city that you are considering moving to before making a decision. I made the mistake of not doing that, and I will be leaving soon. NOTE: Apartmentratings.com keeps coming through this review and deleting stuff, so the reviews, pics, and comments may not follow logistically. UPDATE 3/8/2011: Thanks for your supportive comments. Those nasty hillbillies in "-----------" moved out this past weekend. Yea!!!! UPDATE 10/20/2011: I had to come back here and say that when I wrote this, I had a lot of self-doubt and thought I was losing my mind. I left Columbus and wanted to confirm that I don't have any of these problems where I live now....zero! This was just a weird place. In hindsight, the neighbors probably were homophobic, which is interesting since my partner and I are conservative looking, low-key guys. (I had no idea....so much for being a ----friendly world-class city.) I also think a large part of it was being in Columbus itself....if you aren't an OSU football zombie or in one of their hillbilly cliques, then you are going to feel really out of place. (Sorry to those that commented and stuck up for me, but that's how I feel.) Also, the buildings are laid out community style to where you usually have to walk past other buildings to get to your apartment. That seems like a good idea on one hand, but it raises you visibility and forces you to interact with your neighbors, which is a problem if neither of you like each other. @ anonymous on 2/27/2011 - Yeah, the lady that asked about my deck getting painted had a motorcycle. (Actually, I referred to them as "the motorcycle people".) They were weird and pretentious too. The interesting thing about this is from their apartment and deck, they could not see my deck, so they had to actually walk down the sidewalk and around the building to see that my deck got painted. For people that appeared to be ignoring me, they seemed to be strangely interested in what was going on with me. The husband used to stand outside acting aloof. One day, he was standing out in the open wearing his chaps with a look on his face like he was something special. Whatever! There was one time where I was struggling with a huge multi-function printer that easily weighed 100 lbs. He and his wife were on their deck, which faces the sidewalk, turned, looked, and turned back without offering to help. Great neighbors, huh? @ 43230gurl - I recommended the place because the management and the facilities are adequate. It wouldn't be fair to penalize the complex for the attitudes of the people living there. That's beyond the management's control. As I indicated before, it has to be a strange Columbus clique thing because I don't have any of these problems now in Dayton. As far as the guy losing his deposit, I did send the pictures to the manager and suggested they might want to keep his deposit. Whether they did that or not, I don't know. It's certainly plausible they held it, he was told about this write-up and the pics, and it caused him to lash out. As far as his problem and him posting and deleting comments repetitively, they were weird people. Something about them just didn't add up right. He mentioned to me they moved like gypsies. They barely stayed at this place for a year. He seemed friendly on the surface and had two decent cars, but they kind of reminded me of people that ditched out and didn't pay their bills. Also, it was always something with them....right after they moved in he left his laptop in his car, and he claimed someone broke into his car and stole it. Now, why would you leave a computer in your car even if the area appears to be relatively safe? That's pretty stup!d. Also, they were copycat neighbors.....I bought a wireless doorbell, so they got one......the other neighbors bought Topsy-Turveys and hung them on their porch, so they did that too.....I had string lights, so they put up string lights. The funny thing about their Topsy-Turvey is that theirs died almost right away, and they left it hanging dead from their porch for at least six months, possibly more (seriously).
