Resident 2007 - 2008

3/27/2008

This is an absolutely horrible place to live. That's the main thing you need to know. Let me just make a list: Every room: Every surface is coated in lead-based paint. Be prepared to have your toothbrush, silverware, dishes, food, etc. sitting in cupboards that are covered in lead-based paint. Because I care not to develop the health problems that arise from the ingestion of lead, I rinse off everything prior to using it. Every room: This place is HORRIBLY insulated. The heater comes on constantly, and it's still frigid in my apartment; there are drafts coming from every window. I lay in bed and feel a draft coming on the back of my head and neck. Likewise, there is a ridiculous draft coming from the windows in the living room and through the front door. Because of the draft coming in from the front door, I also get the pleasure of breathing my neighbor's cigarette smoke. Oh, and the apartment managers have told me that there is "nothing they can do." Kitchen: Already covered that the drawers and cupboards are covered in lead-based paint. But let me also advise any readers of the poor refrigerator (the door is not completely sealed). There are no outlets above the cupboards. If you want to plug in a toaster, a microwave, or anything, you have to use an extension cord. Limited counter space: If you did have a microwave, you would eliminate 1/2 of the total counterspace. Stove is old. Linoleum is old and dirty. Cupboards are old and scratched by previous tenants' knives and dinnerware. Kitchen sink leaks water profusely around the faucet handles, and, apparently, it is impossible to fix, because the maintenance staff has failed every time. All that maintenance successfully did when they came was dirty my sink, cupboards, and floor. Living room: Stains on the carpet; granted, the carpet is as old as the dirt that's permanently stuck in it. Windows are incredibly drafty, and you will feel cold air coming through the front door. Oh, the maintenance staff dirty the living room floor when they come too. Dining room: Doesn't exist. Be prepared to take space from your incredibly small kitchen or from your living room if you choose to use a dining room table. Bathroom: Incredibly small. Sink is incredibly old. There is no vanity, and there is no cupboard to store things. The sink drips constantly. It got so bad that it literally RAN. And, of course, the maintenance staff is unable to fix this too. I never realized, until I moved here, just how difficult a leaky faucet was to fix. Bedroom: Drafty windows. The closet managed to fit most of the wardrobe that I brought with me when I moved to Toledo, but there is just a single door, so I have to REACH in to either side to get some clothes out. It's ridiculous. Hallway: I do have a linen closet. The only caveat is that the "shelves" consist of painted pieces of wood that rest LOOSELY on some rails. So if I pull out various items from it, the shelves kind of fall apart. Front door: I have been locked out because of the old deadbolt. My key wouldn't turn the lock, so the "maintenace staff" had to BREAK INTO my apartment in order to get in to open my apartment and replace my lock. And do you think they called to tell me when it had been done? No. I had to call to check on it. As far as the drafty windows, front door, and poor insulation keep this in mind: Just this month, for the month of March, my gas (heating) bill was $220! I paid less than that amount in January! And I turn the heat down while I am gone at school, which is for approximately 12 hours a day (about 8am - 9/10pm.) The staff is also unhelpful. I have to call multiple times to get things done (such as fixing my deadbolt, fixing the leaking sinks, etc.). And, apparently, there is nothing they can do about the noise of other tenants, despite that they state in the lease that they will charge $100 for noise complaints after the first. Just don't move in here. I hate to move, considering it's so close to campus. But what is the point in living in a place that is STILL COLD, even after paying $220 for heat, where maintenance cannot fix anything correctly, and the staff is completely unhelpful. I am moving out at the expiry of my lease.
