Resident 2007 - 2009

2/23/2009

If you smoke, like loud music, snore, and don't have pets, by all means move in. Three of my neighbors smoke, and I don't. So on a summer day, I can't even open my windows without letting the smoke in (front OR back windows... can't leave the front door open either). The apartments don't have AC so it's hell on a hot day. The walls and floors are paper thin. I can hear all of my neighbor's music and be able to identify what TV show they might be watching with little effort. Downstairs neighbor snores, and it's so bad and loud I had to switch which bedroom I kept my bed in to avoid it. (Of course, this neighbor complains if WE make any kind of noise, because she 'can't sleep'... like we can sleep with her snoring.) Right now, the pet fee is $300 non-refundable ON TOP of a $300 deposit. So to own a caged rabbit, we'd have to pay $600. I haven't lived with my own cat for 18 months because I can't afford to move her: she lives with my parents. If it snows, you can't get your car out. The hills are just too steep. When it snowed a couple of feet this winter, some cars couldn't get out at all, and others were abandoned on the rode on the way up, because they just couldn't get in. In nicer weather, it's not that bad. The noise by I-5 can be tuned out with the windows shut, but if you have your windows open on a summer night, you had better have earplugs. If you drive a piece of crud car that breaks down, don't move in, or hope that you have a friend or relative who will loan you their driveway while you fix your car. There are 4 washers in the washroom I use, and on any given day only 2 work properly, and those are taken. It costs $1.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry: that's right, $3 for a single load of laundry. You're better off with a laundromat. Thank god the utilities company they use (AUM) won't be used much longer: nothing but trouble with them. Hopefully the soon-to-be-increased rent will be worth it to not deal with them. The apartment managers are nice, and in our experience they get things done. We recently had sink troubles that got fixed the same day. The floors aren't level. You can walk along and feel a dip and they creak really loudly in certain spots. Oh, don't think you can play DDR: it feels like you'll bust through the floor and if you DO play, there's a 90% chance your downstairs neighbor would complain to you, even if it was the middle of the day. (On that note, you can totally FEEL your neighbors just walking through their apartment, side to side or below.) It gets way too cold. Our power bill (mostly from heat) was $125 last month, and that was keeping the heat no hotter than 60 degrees at any time. The managers WILL complain about condensation on the windows but there's really nothing you can do. The insulation is just terrible. We have been woken up several times to SURPRISE roof work. They never send out a notice saying 'on this day, we'll work on your roof, so expect noise'. The pool is poorly maintained. The filter broke around the end of August and never got fixed, even though it was still pretty hot through September. But the pool is also tiny, so not many people can enjoy it at once. The neighbors also like to smoke like chimneys around the pool, so if you're a non-smoker, you pretty much can count on never swimming. One convenient thing: Trimet is a 5 minute walk away. Just cut through Rasmussen Village apartments through the fire lane and there's Barbur. It was the only thing that saved me during this bad snow: I couldn't have gotten to work otherwise. Want to have a friend over? Hope they don't drive: there are too many cars. People 'make' parking spaces at night, because there just isn't enough parking. Oh, because the apartments suck and there aren't enough tenants to please management, they like to put 'refer a friend and get $200!' notices on your door and along the bulletin boards. This has been going on for months. Gee, I wonder why? (Honestly, I could deal with all of this crap better if it didn't cost so much to have my cat here. If they'd slide on the pet fee, I WOULD refer people here.) Speaking of the pet fee: We were told by the previous managers when we moved in that our carpet would be replaced when we moved out, even if the condition stayed the same. So why should we have to pay the pet fee when the carpet makes NO DIFFERENCE? The managers can't give us a straight answer. The only other problem that I can think of without having to THINK about it is the bug problem. Spiders and stink-bugs and ants EVERYWHERE. The ants took over a month this summer to get under control with Raid and poison bait. I wake up with spider bites about three times a month. I've found several stink bugs in my fish bowl and dead in lamps. (Oh yeah, there aren't ceiling lights in most of the place: if you want to light your living room or bedrooms, you need a lamp.) Guess that's it. It's pretty lame. We're looking to move elsewhere very soon, when our lease is up.
