Resident ā€¢ 2002 - 2004

2/3/2004

DonĀ“t say I never warned you:

The Yards at Union station is an over-priced cheaply-constructed, poorly-managed Mecca for 20-something, drunken, loud, obnoxiously sullen slovenly redneck males of inferior intelligence. For some inexplicable reason, the leasing agents here seem to find them irresistible and rent to as many as possible.

A deceiving facade of scrupulously maintained exterior landscaping belies filthy interior common areas and elevators. Hallways often go weeks without vacuuming, leaving corridors strewn with pull-tabs, cigarette butts, fast food containers, etc.(For explanation, re-read first paragraph.)

THEFT IS RAMPANT. Since management eliminated on-site security patrols, gym equipment, laundry, even furniture deliveries have been stolen. Car break-ins are routine.

Naito Parkway gets closed off for every "Run" or "Walk" event in the city, turning metered parking into towaway zones. Yes, all street parking is metered even though there is NO commercial or business activity in the area. The City of Portland parking patrol is hyper-vigilant about ticketing vehicles for the slightest infractions.

There are no amenities in the immediate neighborhood. No major grocery store, no restaurants, no shops, no drycleaners, no night spots (thank the gods) nothing. Not even Starbucks has seen a potential for this wasteland on the wrong side of the tracks.

Speaking of tracks, as a driver, depending on your luck with timing, expect to be trapped fairly often by long freight trains that inexplicably come to halts of durations of up to a half-hour, blocking both available railroad crossings, leaving tenants extremely vulnerable in the event of medical, fire, or police emergency.

Got the picture?
