Resident 2008 - 2009

3/26/2009

I've lived here a year and might stay for another year if I didn't think I could get a better deal elsewhere. I've had a few issues during my time here, but my biggest issue is the price of the apartment, which is notably more expensive than other places in the area. For a list of pros and cons scroll down to the bottom. I chose to rent from Mozart because I needed to find somewhere before coming to Pitt and they were the only company at the time to have quality floor plans and images of each apartment type online. I'd recommend double checking your floor plan with the office before you sign, mine was mislabeled online. I'm pretty sure most apartments here are pretty spacious though, so it wasn't a huge deal. I've come to really love my apartment, and have had no serious problems (never seen a bug, no leaks, etc). As for the issues people have had with the management, I haven't dealt with them much, so can't really comment on that. The maintenance staff are really friendly, as mentioned in other reviews, and my limited experience with the management leads me to believe many of the reviews aren't too far from the truth. When I was first reading my lease, I noticed a few clauses that I thought were kind of strange, but didn't think much of them. It turns out that I maybe shouldn't have taken them so lightly. When it mentions in the lease that water might be turned off for work on the pipes on Mondays, it turns out that's not just a once in a while thing. I've had my water shut off at least one Monday a month since I've been here, with no warning aside from the mention in the lease/move-in packet. The issue of biggest concern to me during my time here has had to do with a possible fire we had this winter. According to some of the maintenance staff, a woman was cooking and somehow her stove managed to catch fire, and it may have begun to spread into the walls. Though they pulled the fire alarms, no alarm sounded, so the staff had to run through the building banging on doors to get residents out. When I got home later that day, the maintenance staff were staying late to test all of the building's smoke detectors, so I hope the problem's been fixed but can't be sure. A memo from the management was circulated to the residents that informed us that the building might smell of smoke because someone had been cooking and the meal got smokey, no mention of a fire at all, which contradicts the maintenance staff's story. Now for the pros and cons: Pros: - HUGE apartment - wood floors - A/C - great location - quiet inside (no noise from the neighbors, just elevator noise) - utilities included - plenty of laundry machines - friendly maintenance staff - no security deposit or application fee - well maintained, never had a problem in winter Cons: - expensive - only outdoor lot parking ($50/month!) - management has some issues and has little personal interaction with residents - regular water shut offs - some noise from trains and Centre Ave traffic - not part of Pittsburgh residential parking program and guest parking in the apartment lot is restricted - water never gets really hot All in all, my experience here was ok, and I have my doubts as to whether it would have been better with any of the other larger management companies in the area. If you're willing to pay the high price, and deal with some issues and a more impersonal management company a Mozart apartment might be right for you. If not, good luck and keep looking (craigslist might be helpful finding smaller landlords and management companies that will be more likely to have what you're looking for).
