I HAVE LIVED AT CAHABA LAKES FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW AND WAS UNAWARE OF THE VIOLENT CRIMES THAT HAVE OCCURED IN THE PAST AND MOST RECENTLY. IT IS A SHAME THAT ON 8/20/2008 FIVE MEN WERE FOUND IN AN APARTMENT WITH THEIR THROATS SLASHED,THEY WERE ALL HISPANIC. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT ANOTHER SHOOTING OCCURED IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR, ON THE SAME STREET,SUPPOSEDLY BEING RELATED TO A PROTSTITUTION RING BEING RAN ON THE PREMISES!!! AND AGAIN ALL PEOPLE INVOLVED WERE HISPANIC, MORE THAN LIKELY ILLEGALS, IMMIGRATION NEEDS TO COME AND CHECK ALL THE LEASES LEASED TO --------- AND VERIFY ALL IDENTIFICATION IS VALID,IS THE PERSON AND THEY ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED TO BE IN THE UNITED STATES!! SO HOW ARE THEY ABLE TO LEASE AN APARTMENT'' I WAS CHARGED FOR A CREDIT CHECK AND CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK,SO CALLED ADMINISTRATIVE FEES,IF I WANTED TO LIVE IN THE GHETTO I WOULD NOT OF CHOSE THE 280 AREA TO LIVE. OBVIOUSLY THIS ALL FALLS BACK ON THE MANAGEMENT AND JUPITER PROPERTIES, THEY ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB, AND OBVIOUSLY ARE NOT PERFORMING CREDIT CHECKS AND BACKGROUND CHECKS,BUT THEY ARE CHARGING FEES SAYING THAT THEY ARE, WHICH IS FRAUD.. AND THAT IS PUTTING RESIDENTS AND THEIR LIVES IN DANGER. AND IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW ALL THIS HAS COME TO LIGHT THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS.THERE ARE LAWS REGARDING OCCUPANCY OF APARTMENTS, THE STAFF HERE OBVIOUSLY IS NOT CHECKING APTS, THATS WHY THERE'S TEN --------- LIVING IN 1 BEDROOM APTS,AND THAT EXPLAINS THE PARKING ISSUES!! OH AND NOT TO MENTION THAT WE HAVE A SEX OFFENDER, A CONVICTED RAPIST LIVING AT 1906 SPRINGFIELD LOOP WEST, GO TO THE SHELBY COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE WEBSITE AND CHECK IT OUT...THERE IS OBVIOUSLY SOME SHADY ACTIVITY GOING ON WITH THE MANAGEMENT. I ADVISE ALL TENANTS TO CONTACT HUD AND REPORT ALL PROBLEMS AND INCIDENTS, BELOW IS THE INFORMATION TO CONTACTHUD. ALL RESIDENTS NEED TO REPORT ALL SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES, PEOPLE, VEHICLES TO THE SHELBY COUNTY PD, YOU CAN REMAIN ANNONYMOUS, SO THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO GET INVOLVED AND START REPORTING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING TO THE POLICE.THE SHELBY COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN GREAT,THEIR OFFICERS HAVE BEEN HELPFUL,KIND AND UNDERSTANDING TO THE RESIDENTS THRU THIS ORDEAL AND ARE STILL AT THE COMPLEX..SO RESIDENTS UTILIZE THE POLICE AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES THEY ARE HERE TO PROTECT YOU AND YOUR RIGHTS, IF JUPITER PROPERTIES DOES'NT CARE ABOUT ITS TENANTS...THEN AS A COMMUNITY THE TENANTS MUST COME TOGETHER AND FIGHT BACK AS A GROUP TO ENSURE A SAFE PLACE TO LIVE, THATS WHAT ITS GOING TO TAKE TO RUN THE CRIMINALS OUT OF HERE...SO REPORT ALL SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITYS, REPORT ALL APARTMENTS WHERE THERE ARE MULTIPLE FAMILY'S LIVING IN,ANY APARTMENT WHERE THERE IS ALOT OF PEOPLE GOING IN AND OUT...AND OBVIOUS SIGN OF DRUG DEALING, REPORT TENANTS OUTSIDE WITH ALCOHOL OR AT THE POOL, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING...JUPITER PROPERTIES OBVIOUSLY IS NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING OWN THEIR OWN. SO REPORT THEM, GET THE POLICE INVOLVED,THE STATE,AND THE GOVERNMENT!!!

HERE ARE SOME OF THE VIOLENT CRIMES THAT HAVE OCCURRED IN OUR COMMUNITY:

Armed Robbery Hunt Cliff Road
On February 2, 2004 at approximately 3:20 AM, Shelby County Sheriff s Deputies responded to the 5000 block of Hunt Cliff Road in North Shelby County to investigate a robbery. Deputies met with Travis Whited, a 21 year old male, who reported that a male approached his vehicle as he exited near a residence. The male was armed with what appeared to be a shotgun and demanded the victim s vehicle keys and money. The male fled the scene in the victim s silver 2001 Toyota Camry, license number 58N057P. The victim was left unharmed. It is believed that a second male accomplice was present during the robbery and fled the scene in a small white four door vehicle.

Update on April 2, 2006 Double Homicide

Shelby County Sheriff s deputies responded to the scene and other surrounding law enforcement agencies were notified. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim and searched the area for witnesses. Buckhorn Cove is located in northern Shelby County. Shelby County Sheriff s deputies were dispatched to the scene and arrived at 10:08 a.m. to find a male who had been shot in the abdomen. Cahaba Valley Fire and Rescue transported the victim to an area hospital.

Death Investigation on Buckhorn Cove
On Wednesday August 20, 2008, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Shelby County s 911 dispatch center received a call requesting that Shelby County Sheriff s deputies conduct a welfare check at an apartment in the 3000 block of Buckhorn Cove. Sheriff s deputies responded to the scene and discovered five victims within the apartment, all deceased. The apartment was immediately secured and investigators from the Sheriff s Office s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) were called to the scene to begin the process of determining how the victims died. William Lee Slagle (born c. 1947) is a former a Samford University debate coach who killed Rex Copeland, one of his students, on September 21, 1989. He is currently serving a life sentence for the murder.
Slagle, described by students as a demanding instructor, was displeased with Copeland's performance at practice. Copeland was Slagle's star student, but had grown tired of the demands of being on the debate team. Slagle went to Copeland's apartment at Hunters Pointe in Inverness at 2:00 a.m. on September 21 and the two argued. Slagle then stabbed Copeland to death, splattering blood all over the apartment. Slagle then went back to his office and left a voice message for Copeland in an effort to cover up his involvement, instructing Copeland to return for more practice.
Slagle later attended Copeland's visitation and funeral, offering condolences to Copeland's parents. Several days later he fled, but wrote a confession to the Shelby County Sherrif's Office. He was on the run for six months, during which he was featured on an episode of America's Most Wanted, before he surrendered.
Slagle was prosecuted by Shelby County district attorney Mike Campbell. While on the run, Slagle had written additional letters to authorities claiming he had acted in self-defense, however during his trial his students testified he had no visible wounds after the killing. In 1990, Slagle was convicted of the murder and sentence to life in prison.

WOW is right..but I agree as a former resident, Cahaba Lakes is a Nice property but there obviously is something illegal going on within the leasing office and the employees Glad to hear the FBI is involved and I agree with the residents contacting HUD about the conditions and Immigration also, the murder of those 5 men is a shame regardless of their race....but if Cahaba Lakes was conducting credit checks and background checks like they claim to be, and monitoring the residents making sure that the rules they have set for the community are be followed, and most important state and federal laws regarding housing operations. Good luck to all the residents there now...I SAY FIGHT BACK, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND DEMAND SECURITY!!! AND IF THAT DOES'NT WORK JUST MOVE OUT THERES OBVIOUSLY ENOUGH REASONS TO WIN A COURT BATTLE WITH THEM !!

Is there a way to get out of lease without paying a bunch of penalties, e.g. find out a background has not been done when you have paid for one on yourself? I don't believe any young single girl should be living there with all of the crimes going on there. Frankly, I don't think anyone deserves to live in a very unsafe environment such as this. They (management) either need to step up and do their job as well as the properties owner(s) or they need to let people out of their leases without a hassle and paying a lot of money. Safety should be their No. 1 Priority and it dosen't seem to be.

TIREDOFTHEVIOLENCE, I am a very frustrated resident as yourself. My car was set on fire, and the office is pretending like they know nothing about. I am in the 2600 building on Springfield Loop. I am trying to get out of my lease. I would love to meet with you sometime to discuss this situation further.

My family and I vacated the premises after the 5 murders occured close to my residence. I was unable to return due to fear and unable to sleep for several days. I left before my lease was up and now being threated because my lease has not expired. Is there a class action lawsuit out there. If so, I am interested in participating along with several I would imagine.
