I moved out of the Summit in January of 2008 and got a letter in the mail yesterday (7-01-09) from a collection service claiming I owed them $140. I called Cameron's office to inquire about the money owed and of course the ditsy girl had no clue how to look up such a thing (not that I expected anything different from their office staff, they are the worst I have ever dealt with.) So then I called the collection service to see if they had any info on why I owed this amount. They claimed it was for damages to the apartment not covered by the sure deposit. Now I may be wrong but I thought the whole point in me paying the $200 Sure Deposit in lieu of a refundable deposit was to cover any damages that might have occurred. Either way I only lived in that apartment for 7 months and I left everything exactly the way I found it, including the loose faucets and missing door handles that they claimed they would fix/replace on day one but never did. When I asked what the damages were they told me that since I didn't schedule a move out inspection that I waived my right to know what the damages were. This is absurd, I called the office a month before moving and spoke with them about when I would be out and personally handed one of the girls at the office the keys when I left and no one ever said anyhting about having a move out inspection. Even if I did waive my right, if it was legitimate damage then why would they have a problem telling me about it'
So moving on, I asked why I'm just now hearing about this a year and a half later and he told me that Cameron had sent letters to me in Feb. 2008. I asked what address and he gave me the address of my current residence which I didnt move into until jan. 2009. By the way I gave them my parents address as a forwarding address incase of a situation like this coming up. After the guy stops shuffling papers around trying to figure out how they knew where I was going to be living a year before I lived there I asked him why they just didnt call me since they had my number on the lease agreement. His response is that they are not required to call.
Bottom line I paid the amount because I found that they had turned me into the 3 major credit bureaus and I figured the quicker I pay the better of I was. And since I can't seem to find my copy of the lease agreement I would have little success fighting it. So now my credit is going to go down even though I payed the amount in less than 24 hours after receiving my first notice.
So everyone save yourself a headache and live somewhere else. I would recommend Wildforest apts in Homewood which is where I live now. The office girls are on top of things and the maintenace crew are first class. (and no, I have no affiliation whatsoever with Wildforest, I just believe they deserve a shout-out for providing good service)
