FLEE! RUN AWAY!
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 5/16/2005
Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2005
There are two good things about living in these apartments. 1) The price (buyer beware- you get what you pay for), and 2) I was smart enough to only sign a 6 month lease in this HELL.
I recently had to relocate on very-short notice due to a job change, and my roommate and I decided on LGA due to its convenient location, and reasonable rent rates.
The staff was extremely un-cooperative in the process of signing the lease. I was trying to co-ordinate the lease from 800 miles away. The leasing agents made me fly down for one day just to sign the lease while I was in training for my job, because my roommate needed to move in a few days before I was able to relocate. It wasn't the fact that I had to do what they needed me to in order to have an apartment that upset me, it was the uncompromising unwillingness to seek a resolution or compromise or alternative. The my way or the highway attitude.
A month or so after I had moved in, the mailman knocked on my door and informed me that the mailbox we were provided with was a health risk, and would be unable to deliver mail to it, and our mail would be available in the leasing office. It is now well into 5 months later, and the problem has not been corrected. When is this going to be fixed'
The sink in my forty year old apartment does not drain. I call and I call to have it fixed, and the repairman shows up after three days with a plunger, plunges it for 2 minutes and goes away. I use the sink again, and the problem remains. When there is a recurring problem that takes resources away from the company, most prudent people fix the problem, not a temporary fix to be delayed until something more catastrophic happens.
My lease contract states "Landlord shall have the right of access to apartment, without notice, for inspection and maintenance DURING REASONABLE HOURS." There is a lack of definition to reasonable hours. I am sure the intent was to avoid the guy who is renovating the electrical outlet from coming in at 2 in the morning to drill holes and bang on walls. I work nights. I get up at noon. The apartment complex personnel may have free reign in my apartment after that time, but before it is disrespectful to infringe on my right as a paying customer to enjoy a nights sleep. There are many renovations occurring at this apartment complex, I knew this going into the lease, and I own earplugs and can sleep through just about anything- including the backhoe situated below my window for the last few months. I even shrugged off the workers who moved my bed to access an electrical outlet WHILE I SLEPT IN IT. Twice now in the last week during these upgrades the water has been shut off because an irresponsible party broke some waterlines.
I called the leasing office and they are sure it is of no concern to them, and do not wish to address my complaints. The second time I called them, the person that answered the phone hung up on me, and refused to acknowledge and responsibility of the apartment complex to its tenants. Despite being plain rude, this exhibits some of the worst customer service I have ever encountered.
I will not be renewing my lease, my experience here has been miserable, and the staff could care less and only care about getting their rent. I would really be interested to know what their turnover rates are with such awful service and safety.
Parking has not been a problem, the lots are well lit, and in decent condition. I can not speak to the security, as I take many, many precautions to ensure my car is secure.
Do NOT live here if you are sensitive to noise. One time a workman spent three days banging on a pipe in the apartment beneath mine. I don't think he was doing any actual work, just banging on pipes.
The grounds and the apartments themselves are acceptable- I actually like how the building looks. Some of the singles have really nice (albeit in poor shape) sweeping staircases that add a lot of southern charm to its facade). I give them the benefit of the doubt with all the remodeling going on as far as the landscaping. Most buildings have what could be very nice courtyards, but as they are they look run-down and delapidated.
Safety is a major issue. Most of my apartment windows do not lock. Part of the lease is a waiver in case pipes burst or plaster falls or stairs collapse. That is normal... What is not normal is that the lease also tries to say they are not responsible for damage resulting from their negligence. I do not feel safe walking on the balconys. That suggests to me that there has been a problem in the past, and they do not wish to take ownership in the condition of their property.
All the fixtures and walls and carpet are in merely a passable condition- they are old aparments and they are cheap... What earns a one-star rating in this category is the CRAP insulation. I can see outdoors with my door closed. Somehow the temerature manages to magnify itself 10x. In winter if it was 30 outside it was 10 inside, and in the summer if its 80 outside its 110 inside. There is central air and heating, but they both run continuously to get the temperture to a reasonable level. That means the electric bill is MUCH higher than it ought to be, especially considering the very, very old a/cs and heaters they use (but they do seem to be replacing them with newer equipment. One other gripe is I get two minutes of hot water from a full water heater... more $$$$
The long and short of my opinion is do not rent here. I hope this review is helpful to you, I have tried to be fair, and present the good along with the bad.
