I lived at Redmont Gardens for two years while in grad school at UAB. While my experience in Birmingham was great - I love the city - I agree with most of the negative comments about RG. The parking is terrible, laundry facilities are inconvenient, there are bug problems (even if you clean & regularly take out trash), paint chips off the walls, you won't get all your deposit back for some contrived reason (although deposit is relatively cheap), the radiator heating system is controlled by management and makes apartments uncomfortably cold/warm/dry, $130/mo for utilities is a little steep, and walls/floors are thin. However, the commute to UAB/South Side/Lakeview is very convenient, the area is safe, and the aforementioned problems are not impossible to deal with. If you have time to look around, you can find better for less. I didn't have much time to look, so I moved to RG, and it was never bad enough to spend the time and money to move out - I left to take a job elsewhere upon graduation.
