The nightmare started the day before I moved in. I was moving to Birmingham from out of state and had a friend go by to check on apartment. Apartment had not been cleaned or painting finshed. When I arrived at my apartment, it was only surfaced cleaned, the locks had not been changed, I recieved no key to my mailbox, the ceiling fans that were promised were not installed, the washer in dryer that was supposed to be in unit were missing in action. It only gets worse.
It was a week after my arrival I learned the maintanence department had not been told about my missing washer and dryer. At this point, all available laundry units had been placed in other units and was told that a new unit was on order. I was told not to expect laundry unit for two weeks. I was told to deduct the cost of laundry from next months rent as long as a reciept was provided to office. Coin laundry mats don't give reciepts! One the first of the month came, I called management to check the status of my laundry machines to and ask about what to do for luandry reciept since you can't get one from coin machines. I was told that I could not be helped and that I needed to come back to office on Monday. I was told the office would be open till 6pm. Monday, the last day to pay rent before late fee was added, I left my new job early to arrive at office before 6. I arrived at 5:45 to find the door locked and no one inside. Tuesday, unable to get to the office before 5. I spoke to the manager who was shocked that I was not given a washer and dryer yet. She had to check with maintence to see if a laundry unit was available and I would have it Tuesday night or Wed. morning. Friday morning, still no laundry machines. Circumstances Friday allowed me to stop by the office. Once again, a manager that does not follow up on anything, appeared shocked. She asked the gentleman in the office to have the unit delivered that day. When I arrived that evening, the unit had been delivered. When I turned on the machine, water went all over the floor, soaking my carpet and pad. After reaching the answering service, it was an hour and 45 minutes before maintenace called back. When maintenance arrived I was told the washer was broken and another would have to be ordered and that someone would come that evening to extract the water from the carpet. They never came! Sat. morning at 10, I went to the office to ask about deflooding my apartment, when they finally did come, they removed the padding under the carpet and left the water. At 12:45, went to leasing office and was told someone would be out in 10 minutes. At 1pm, I turned on my lamp, heard a pop, and power went out in living room. I went to breaker box, turned breaker off and back on and power did not come back on. Went back to office, they said they would send someone out to check power and extract water. At 5pm, two non-English speaking men showed up at door with a shop vac and tried to extract the water out of the carpet. They left, carpet was still wet and still no electricity. On Sunday, did not hear anything from management while sitting in a dark, wet apartment. On Monday morning, I talked to Landmark's corporate office. She told me that the regional manager would return my call that day. At 3, no one called so I returned call and was assured Susanne would call back that day. Nobody called. Went to office again at 4:45 to get something done. The assistant manager sent maintenance with to apartment to check power and carpet people were on the way. Maintenance told me that the entire apartment would have to be rewired but was promised it would be finished the next day. At 6:30, carpet guy shows up, speaking English this time but without tools to fix carpet. Gave me a fan and promised to have it fixed by end of next day. How am I to run a fan with no electricity' Tueday, nothing happened. Wednesday morning, called corporate office, was told someone would call me. Called the leasing office as well, the assistant manager informed me that reason nothing happend on Tuesday is because the carpet guy, and independant contractor, took the key on Monday and did not return it. We won't chase the rabbit of safety of a strange man running around with key to my apartment that is dark with no electricity. Wednesday, I talked to Cindy, the complex manager and told her I wanted out of my lease. I felt my saftey was compromised and had been severely mistreated and no longer feel obligated to lease from them. She told me that I would have to give 60 days notice and an additional months rent to get out of lease. I told her I wanted to the name and phone number of her supervisor. Thursday, 11:45 am, someone from Birmingham regional office told me Suzanne would call me in one hour. At 3:15, I was told Suzanne had not and would not be in at all that day. At 3:30 I called corporate office again. At that point, my complaints were forwarded to the CEO and COO of the company. Friday, Suzanne finally calls me back. Suzanne is Birmingham regional vice president. Suzanne said that my locks had been changed, the power was on, the carpet was cleaned and everything was as it should be. She said they would take $100 off my next months rent. I told her that was an insult after this charade. I told her I wanted out of my lease and that my apartment was a lemon. She told me that we lived in the real world and I could have 1/2 months rent. When I arrived at my apartment, like any true lemon, it still wasn't completely right. The carpet had not padding replaced. It has been another week and still things are not fixed.
Addionally, after two weeks and several request, I got my mailbox key. By this time, the mailbox was overflowing and my mail was being returned to sender. Since I was starting with a new company, my health benefits were not received along with other mail. This has caused problems resovling with my employer as well as keeping me from get medical services that were needed.
I have now consulted with and attorny to resolve this ongoing nightmare
