I lived here for three years during college, and in looking at the rental prospects for the city I am now moving to, I realize how lucky I was to find this place. First of all, I looked at just about every apartment complex within 5 miles of UAB, and this is by far the best value for a student or young couple.
The apartment complex is a little older, about 30 years or so, but it s very well-maintained. They are frequently doing little things to improve the common areas. I never had any pest problems, and every single maintenance issue I had was resolved within a day. Everyone on the staff is wonderful: friendly, accommodating, responsive, you name it; I haven't had a single problem with them. They promptly take care of community issues, such as parking problems, people not picking up after their dogs, etc. All of them wave when they see you, and you could probably ask just about anything of them and they'd do what they can.
The only problem I had with living here was the noise, which I guess can be expected in a community with mostly young people. I recommend living on the back side, upstairs. I live on the front, first-floor and the junk cars, supped-up mufflers and stereos, inconsiderate upstairs neighbors, and teenage boys who play football outside at 3am were no match for the old floors and drafty door and windows. But, I will say I only heard that stuff in the living area; I'm a light sleeper and rarely heard a thing back in the bedroom.
The location is extremely convenient, right next to stores, restaurants, I-65, and less than 10 minutes to UAB. The only traffic trouble is when there's a horrific wreck on the interstate during rush hour and everyone detours. It is MUCH safer than Southside (and most of the surrounding area too, for that matter) and borders Homewood, which is a nice little suburb to be close to. My rent only went up once in three years, and it was a $15 increase, still way cheaper than full price, taking into account my student discount.
Another thing, please, exercise some common sense when outside. As a young female living on her own, I never had any problems, even when coming in at all hours and having to walk across the complex from parking spot to apartment door. But, I have heard a few unsettling stories from other girls who live in the area (especially from Collegiate Hall down the street). Although there is a mix of young couples, students, and divorcees, the younger day-labor type guys seem to be in the majority, at least on my end of the complex. You might see a few shady people around, and there is the occasional inappropriate amount of attention being paid to you from a distance, but people here mostly keep to themselves and leave you alone; just keep that "I'm paying attention, don't mess with me" demeanor up.
I see both Birmingham and Homewood police patrolling the area, and they are quick to come out when there's something going on, but other than a few domestic disturbances, I rarely seem them here on calls. Plus, there is steady traffic and people out pretty much all the time, which is a mostly good thing. It's good that there are people out when you're out, and even though you can't exactly call them neighborly, everyone's really nosey, so if someone messes with you thers's going to be someone around.
Overall, for value, convenience, and all I still give it an A.
