I've been living in Homewood Gardens for about 5 months now and while I have no major gripes with the apartment (other than the fact that they decided to tear them down and have yet to tell the residents) there are lots of little things that build up quickly. The entire complex is made out of concrete blocks, so don't plan on using a cell phone in the middle of your apartment. Overall it is falling apart. The grounds are generally unkept (with the occasional mowing) and the walkways can be hazardous.

The fixtures are old and falling apart. There is no light on the ceiling in our living room, we had to provide our own. I don't know if that's a common occurance in apartments or what, but it was a slight turn off. The wiring in our suite is so shoddy that I cannot use my computer in our room due to the lack of power reaching my machine.

The rooms are a bit small, with the kitchen and bathroom being very much so. Don't try baking anything in the oven because no cookie sheet on earth will fit in there. The stove is small as well.

I suppose if you have a great affinity for wildlife you're in luck because every square inch of this apartment complex is infested with roaches and ants. You'll even get the occasional centipede crawling across your floor when you least expect it.

Parking is so-so. If you can park on the main road then you're good to go, but if that's full then you have to park out back. This area looks like it was taken straight from the scene of a noir film, looking quite shoddy and a bit unnerving. At night it's poorly lit.

The main office and maintenance people are all off site (can't blame them honestly) so service is a bit slow. At least they give you 5 days to get your rent in.

If you're looking for a quiet place to live this is it...unless of course there's a fire anywhere within a 5 mile radius. The fire station is on the same street as these apartments and it doesn't matter what time of the day it is...they can and WILL use that siren!

There are a few upsides to this place though. The location is absolutely perfect. I work in downtown Birmingham and can get to work via 31 in less than 5 minutes. It's in the heart of Homewood and you can walk to almost anything you want. The grocery store is less than 1 block away. Amsouth is less than a block. Restaurants and specialty shops of every sort are within a 2-3 minute walk. It feels very safe, the result of being on the same street as the police and fire stations.

Overall the downsides outweigh the upsides. As stated they are tearing this complex down. I'm looking for a nicer place to move. x-2PE3sjUIIeetAHoKOk
